The Best Treatments for Androgenetic Alopecia in 2019

Best Treatments for Androgenetic Alopecia in 2019

If you are experiencing hair loss, the odds are pretty high that the cause of your troubles is androgenetic alopecia, more commonly known as pattern baldness. Over 95% of hair loss cases are due to this hereditary hair loss condition that affects over three million Americans annually. Androgenetic alopecia causes hair miniaturization, a condition in which hair becomes thinner and finer each time it goes through the growth cycle. Eventually, these hairs cease to grow entirely and fall out.

Men, as well as women, have struggled with pattern baldness for centuries. For a long time, treatment options consisted of nothing more than wigs, toupees, and creative hairstyling efforts. None of these approaches actually addressed the underlying condition, of course, and didn’t fool most people.

Fortunately, in 2019, we now have plentiful options for addressing hair loss caused by androgenetic alopecia. Advancements in medicine, technology, and techniques have made hair restoration more available, more effective, and more convenient than ever before.

At the Miami Hair & Skin Institute, we pride ourselves on offering the most innovative approaches to hair restoration, and our surgeons are world-renowned experts in hair transplant surgery and other treatments. Here are the best options for treating androgenetic alopecia, all of which are available at the Miami Hair & Skin Institute:

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

This non-invasive treatment option involves the use of specialized combs and caps, including the Capillus272 laser cap, a device approved by the FDA for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia.

LLLT nourishes hair follicles by directing pulses of energy into inactive follicles. These pulses stimulate the hairs back into a phase of regrowth by promoting increased circulation and cellular respiration.

The Capillus 272 caps we offer contain 272 professional-strength lasers that make it the most powerful at-home device for treating hair loss in men. Discreet and appearing like any other baseball cap, you can wear it throughout the day, going on with your life while your hat takes care of the business of strengthening your hair follicles.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

A rapidly expanding body of evidence supports the effectiveness (and safety) of a relatively new treatment that involves the use of the body’s own natural growth and healing factors to stimulate hair regrowth. Platelet-rich plasma therapy takes the body’s natural processes and supercharges them. A blood sample is taken from the patient and then placed in a centrifuge where the platelets are separated from other elements of the blood. The PRP is then injected into the treatment area, stimulating the work that the body is already doing.

Stem Cell Therapy

Full heads of hair are the result of hair follicles which are continually regenerating, due in part to the presence of stem cells. But when those stem cells shrink and deteriorate as we age, hair stops renewing and ultimately falls out. That’s why reintroducing an individual’s own stem cells back to the follicles has the potential to create a nourishing environment which may foster regrowth and fight the battle against hair loss

Using a liposuction tool, we take fat cells from the belly, flanks, or love handles and extract the stem cells that can foster hair growth. We then inject this concentrated stem cell sample onto the scalp. The procedure is fast and minimally invasive.

Hair Restoration Drugs

Hair loss medications such as Rogaine® (Minoxidil) and Propecia are popular and proven ways to treat male pattern hair loss without surgery. Both drugs, for the right patients, can stop or slow down hair loss and stimulate new hair growth in many men.

Hair Transplant Surgery

Our surgeons are world-renowned leaders in hair transplant surgery, have been instrumental in the development of the most effective and widely used techniques, and have used their skills, experience, and artistry to perform successful procedures on thousands of men.

If you are one of the millions of men and women who experienced hair loss in 2018 (and 2017, 2016, 2015…), consider making 2019 the year that you get back the full, youthful looking head of hair you once had.

We see ourselves as true partners with our patients as they begin and continue their hair restoration journey. We provide assistance and guidance for those struggling with the psychological impact of hair loss. We also help our patients make lifestyle changes – such as stress reduction and healthier diets rich in hair-strengthening nutrients – that can slow hair shedding and promote the retention and growth of healthy, resilient hair.

You may have tried shampoos, medication, or other home efforts to slow down or reverse your hair loss with no success, or maybe you’ve done nothing at all.

There is no time like the beginning of the year to finally do things differently. By taking action, you’ll improve your self-esteem and overall sense of wellness, and you will feel a sense of pride in successfully addressing a problem that had likely been bothering you for a long time.

The first step is a phone call to our office to schedule a hair loss consultation at the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami. At your initial evaluation, you’ll meet with a doctor, not merely a “consultant.” We will evaluate your hair loss using a comprehensive and proven methodology, obtain a detailed medical history, perform an in-depth scalp examination using state-of-the-art diagnostic tools and if indicated, use blood tests to detect any underlying imbalances or deficiencies that may be contributing to the hair loss problem. With this information, we can determine the cause of hair loss and the most effective treatment option.

Stem Cell Therapy

Can Stem Cell Therapy Replace Hair Transplants

Stem Cell TherapyStem cells are the multi-talented repairmen of our bodies, maintaining and restoring healthy functioning everywhere, fixing the body by dividing and replacing damaged tissues. For a number of years, stem cell research has held the promise of leveraging their power to promote healing and treat a wide range of ailments and issues. Now new stem cell efforts and techniques are showing that reintroducing an individual’s own stem cell back into hair follicles can create a nourishing environment which may foster regrowth and fight the battle against hair loss.

Multiple teams of researchers are currently working on stem cell hair loss therapies, and some techniques have advanced to the point such that they are being used effectively on patients suffering from hair loss, including stem cell therapy offered at the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami.

Minimally invasive, stem cell therapy for hair loss involves isolating a few ounces of adult stem cells from fat deposits in the abdomen, flanks, or love handles and reintroducing those cells to the scalp. A physician removes those fat cells from the patient’s midsection using a “mini” liposuction procedure. Before this approximately 20-minute-long outpatient procedure, the doctor will administer a mild oral sedative and local anesthesia, minimizing pain or discomfort.

Following the liposuction, the physicians performing the procedure will isolate the stem cells while you rest. Once isolated, the hair loss physician will inject the stem cells into targeted areas of the scalp, where they will start their work stimulating hair growth.

The whole procedure should last approximately three hours. As an outpatient procedure, patients can go home shortly after that. However, since mild sedation is involved, patients should arrange for someone else to drive them home. While there may be some mild soreness after the procedure, patients should be able to go back to work the next day.

It may take a few months before noticing results. Since this is a relatively new procedure, it is not yet clear how long results will last. However, the team at the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami is optimistic about the potential for long-term hair regrowth, particularly with ongoing treatment.

Research has found stem cell hair transplants can be an effective way of treating hair loss conditions such as:

  • male androgenetic alopecia
  • androgenetic alopecia
  • cicatricial alopecia

Stem cell treatment can be used in conjunction with hair transplant surgery, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections, topical treatments or low-level laser therapy (LLLT) to increase your chances of a successful outcome.

New Clues to Baldness Uncovered, and Stem Cells May Help

New Clues to Baldness Uncovered, and Stem Cells May HelpWe’re just two months in to 2016, and already there have been a handful of new discoveries uncovering new clues to what causes androgenetic alopecia, or hair loss. Together, these studies have furthered researchers’ understanding of hair loss and viable treatment options. As a growing body of research continues to identify specific proteins and cells responsible for hair follicle shutdown, it becomes increasingly clear why stem cell therapy can help.

Damaged DNA has been identified as a major causal factor for hair loss. A long held belief, this theory was put to the test by researchers in Japan, the Netherlands, and the United States (source: MedicalXpress.com).

A specific follicle protein has been identified as another factor by researchers at the University of Colorado. According to studies, the protein seems to be “responsible for causing follicle stem cells to go dormant,” (source: NewsMax.com).

In both cases, researchers see the opportunity to use stem cell therapy to reverse or inhibit the changes that ultimately lead to pattern baldness.
