PRP for Hair Loss: What You Need to Know

PRP FAQ: Will PRP Work on an Area that is Balding?

PRP for Balding AreasThe reason that we offer multiple options for the treatment of hair loss is because there are multiple types of hair loss. Which hair restoration approach is best for you depends on several factors, including the nature, extent, and progression of your hair loss, the underlying reasons behind the issue, your health and medical history, and your personal hair restoration goals.

For some patients, medication or low-level laser therapy may be the best strategy. Hair transplant surgery is, of course, a popular and effective treatment. And for an increasing number of men and women, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is the choice for addressing hair loss.

One of the questions we are often asked about PRP therapy is whether it will work on areas that are balding. The answer, unfortunately, is that as wonderful and revolutionary as PRP therapy is, it may not be the best alternative for those whose hair loss has progressed to the point of significant balding.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy?

Platelets, the clotting cells in our blood, also contain powerful growth and healing factors that initiate repairs and provide assistance to stem cells in damaged muscle, tendon, and ligaments. PRP therapy essentially takes these natural healing elements and supercharges them. In the context of repairing and strengthening hair follicles, PRP appears to nurture follicles with critical growth factors that take them from a dormant state (in which hair is no longer growing) to an active state (in which a normal hair growth cycle occurs).

Why PRP May Not Be The Right Approach for Balding Areas

PRP therapy works by stimulating the growth of existing hair; it does not lead to the growth of new hair. As such, it is best suited for thinning areas of the scalp where some follicles remain rather than completely bald regions where there is no hair to stimulate. The best candidates for PRP therapy are those who are in the early stages of hair loss and may have areas of “weak quality” hair growth on the scalp which the treatment can target for strengthening and increased growth. If your hair loss has advanced to the point where there are extensive bald patches, it is likely that your hair restoration physician will recommend a different treatment option for you.

PRP with Different Preparation Systems

Miami Hair Doctors Examine Variability of PRP in ISHRS Forum International

PRP with Different Preparation SystemsNumerous hair restoration doctors have advocated the use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) as a means to improve hair growth and limit hair loss. The use of PRP for wound healing has been well documented. It has been used for problems ranging from orthopedic injuries to dentistry.

In this July/August edition of the ISHRS Forum International, Miami Hair doctors, Dr. Paul Rose and Dr. Aron Nusbaum, evaluate the concentration of platelets produced by four different commercially available systems. The platelet counts in the PRP were compared to the whole blood concentration of platelets in each patient.

The results demonstrated a wide variance in platelet concentrations among the different systems.

PRP Therapy for Hair Loss

Who is a Good Candidate for PRP Therapy Hair Restoration?

PRP Therapy for Hair LossPlatelet-rich plasma (PRP Therapy) is a new biotechnology which is proving itself to be a revolutionary treatment for healing certain injuries, speeding recovery after surgery, and fixing dermatological issues. A growing body of evidence, including a report published earlier this year, has now shown that PRP therapy can also be an effective treatment for hair loss, including androgenic alopecia, the most common form of pattern baldness responsible for over 95 percent of hair loss cases in men and women.

Not all hair restoration treatments are right for every person suffering from hair loss. A skilled and experienced hair transplant and restoration physician can and should evaluate each patient individually to determine the optimal treatment for their unique hair loss condition. That goes for PRP therapy as well, and whether this exciting new option for addressing hair loss is right for you depends on several factors.

What is Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy?

Platelets are the clotting cells of our blood, but they are also enriched with growth and healing factors that will initiate repair and provide assistance to stem cells in damaged muscle, tendon, and ligaments.

PRP contains various growth factors and cytokines that enhance the body’s inherent capacity to repair and regenerate. PRP therapy essentially takes the body’s natural processes and turbocharges them. A sample of blood is taken from the patient and then placed in a centrifuge where the platelets are separated from other elements of the blood. As used in the treatment of injuries and trauma, that platelet-rich plasma is then injected into the injured tissue, stimulating the work that the body is already doing.

PRP’s high concentrations of over 20 growth factors include numerous factors thought to stimulate hair regrowth. PRP appears to nurture hair follicles with critical growth factors that take them from a dormant state (in which hair is no longer growing) to an active state (in which a normal hair growth cycle occurs).

Are You a Candidate for PRP Therapy?

As noted, PRP therapy may not be the most effective course of treatment for every patient. But PRP therapy is an option you should definitely discuss with your hair loss physician if you:

  • Are in the early stages of hair loss
  • Have areas of “weak quality” hair growth on your scalp, where functioning hair follicles can still be observed
  • Have small areas of alopecia areata
  • Are in good health and are not suffering from certain types of blood disorders, skin issues, liver disorders, or diabetes
