How To Handle a Bald Spot

How to Handle a Bald Spot

A bald spot on the crown of the head is one of the defining features of male pattern hair loss. It is also often the first way people realize that they have a hair loss issue. It can be disconcerting to watch what was once a full head of hair slowly give way to a growing patch of bare skin. While there is no cure for male pattern baldness, the good news is that there are plenty of ways to handle a bald spot that can make it less prominent or restore hair to the affected area.

At The Miami Hair Institute, we offer several surgical and non-surgical treatment options for individuals with bald spots or other hair loss issues.  Here are just a few of the safe, effective, and proven hair restoration treatments that we use to handle bald spots:

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) is an increasingly popular non-invasive approach to hair restoration. LLLT involves the use of specially designed caps and combs that direct pulses of energy into inactive hair follicles, stimulating them back into a regrowth phase by promoting increased circulation and cellular respiration.

The FDA-approved Capillus272 laser cap device contains 272 small, professional-strength lasers but is otherwise indistinguishable from any regular baseball cap, so you can go about your life while you strengthen your hair follicles and reduce the size and prominence of your bald spot.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet-rich plasma therapy takes the body’s natural healing and growth processes and turbocharges them. In PRP therapy, we take a blood sample from the patient and place it in a centrifuge that separates the platelets from other elements of the blood. We then inject the PRP into the treatment area, stimulating the repair and healing that the body is already engaged in.

Stem Cell Therapy

Full heads of hair result from hair follicles that continually regenerate, due in part to the presence of stem cells. But stem cells can shrink and deteriorate as we age, which causes hair to stop renewing and ultimately fall out. That’s why reintroducing an individual’s own stem cells back to the follicles has the potential to create a nourishing effect that may foster regrowth in balding areas.

In stem cell therapy, we take fat cells from the belly, flanks, or love handles using a liposuction tool and extract the stem cells that can foster hair growth. We then inject this concentrated stem cell sample onto the scalp. The procedure is fast and minimally invasive.

Hair Restoration Medications

Hair loss medications such as Propecia and Rogaine® (Minoxidil) are proven, popular and non-surgical ways to treat bald spots caused by pattern hair loss. Both drugs, for certain patients, can stop or slow down hair loss and even stimulate new hair growth.

Hair Transplant Surgery

Of course, the Miami Hair Institute is a world leader in advanced hair transplant surgery. Our surgeons have been pioneers in the development of the most influential and widely used surgical techniques and have used their skills, experience, and artistry to perform successful procedures on thousands of patients from around the globe.

Hair Loss Treatments in 2020

No one likes to break promises. But every year, as the calendar turns from December to January, all of us make promises to ourselves – New Year’s resolutions – that we tend to break in a matter of weeks or months (or days!)

If you are and have been experiencing hair loss, you may have had one or more New Year’s Days where you woke up and said: “This is the year I’m going to do something about it!” If that’s you, and you still haven’t done anything about your hair loss, make 2020 different. By making one phone call to the Miami Hair & Skin Institute today, you can put yourself on track for a fuller, more youthful head of hair and increased self-confidence this year.

We offer several surgical and non-surgical treatment options for men and women living with every type and degree of hair loss issues. Our world-renowned hair restoration experts have the experience and insights to choose the treatment option best suited to your goals.

Here are just a few of the effective, safe, and proven 2020 hair restoration treatments we offer at the Miami Hair & Skin Institute:

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

A popular non-invasive hair loss treatment, low-level laser therapy (LLLT) involves the use of specialized caps and combs which direct pulses of energy into inactive hair follicles. These pulses stimulate the follicles back into a phase of regrowth by promoting increased circulation and cellular respiration.

Among the LLLT options we offer is the Capillus272 laser cap. This FDA-approved device contains 272 professional-strength lasers that make it the most powerful at-home tool for treating hair loss. The cap is indistinguishable from any other baseball cap, so you can go about your life while simultaneously strengthening your hair follicles and turning the tide against hair loss.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

An increasing body of research has shown the effectiveness (and safety) of an approach to hair restoration that utilizes the body’s own natural growth and healing factors to stimulate the regrowth of hair. Platelet-rich plasma therapy takes the body’s natural processes and turbocharges them. In this therapy, we take a blood sample from the patient and place it in a centrifuge where the platelets are separated from other elements of the blood. We then inject the PRP into the treatment area, stimulating the repair and healing that the body is already working on.

At the 2019 Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Dermatology, the author of a comprehensive study about the use of PRP wrote that “With consensus forming around treatment protocols, studies are indicating that PRP is a safe, effective hair loss treatment that has the potential to greatly improve the quality of life of millions of people.” We agree.

Stem Cell Therapy

Full heads of hair are the result of hair follicles which are continually regenerating, due in part to the presence of stem cells. But when those stem cells shrink and deteriorate as we age, hair stops renewing and ultimately falls out. That’s why reintroducing an individual’s own stem cells back to the follicles has the potential to create a nourishing environment which may foster regrowth and fight the battle against hair loss

Using a liposuction tool, we take fat cells from the belly, flanks, or love handles and extract the stem cells that can foster hair growth. We then inject this concentrated stem cell sample onto the scalp. The procedure is fast and minimally invasive.

Hair Restoration Drugs

Hair loss medications such as Rogaine® (Minoxidil) and Propecia are popular and proven ways to treat pattern hair loss without surgery. Both drugs, for the right patients, can stop or slow down hair loss and stimulate new hair growth in many patioent.

The Best Treatments for Androgenetic Alopecia in 2019

Best Treatments for Androgenetic Alopecia in 2019

If you are experiencing hair loss, the odds are pretty high that the cause of your troubles is androgenetic alopecia, more commonly known as pattern baldness. Over 95% of hair loss cases are due to this hereditary hair loss condition that affects over three million Americans annually. Androgenetic alopecia causes hair miniaturization, a condition in which hair becomes thinner and finer each time it goes through the growth cycle. Eventually, these hairs cease to grow entirely and fall out.

Men, as well as women, have struggled with pattern baldness for centuries. For a long time, treatment options consisted of nothing more than wigs, toupees, and creative hairstyling efforts. None of these approaches actually addressed the underlying condition, of course, and didn’t fool most people.

Fortunately, in 2019, we now have plentiful options for addressing hair loss caused by androgenetic alopecia. Advancements in medicine, technology, and techniques have made hair restoration more available, more effective, and more convenient than ever before.

At the Miami Hair & Skin Institute, we pride ourselves on offering the most innovative approaches to hair restoration, and our surgeons are world-renowned experts in hair transplant surgery and other treatments. Here are the best options for treating androgenetic alopecia, all of which are available at the Miami Hair & Skin Institute:

Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT)

This non-invasive treatment option involves the use of specialized combs and caps, including the Capillus272 laser cap, a device approved by the FDA for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia.

LLLT nourishes hair follicles by directing pulses of energy into inactive follicles. These pulses stimulate the hairs back into a phase of regrowth by promoting increased circulation and cellular respiration.

The Capillus 272 caps we offer contain 272 professional-strength lasers that make it the most powerful at-home device for treating hair loss in men. Discreet and appearing like any other baseball cap, you can wear it throughout the day, going on with your life while your hat takes care of the business of strengthening your hair follicles.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

A rapidly expanding body of evidence supports the effectiveness (and safety) of a relatively new treatment that involves the use of the body’s own natural growth and healing factors to stimulate hair regrowth. Platelet-rich plasma therapy takes the body’s natural processes and supercharges them. A blood sample is taken from the patient and then placed in a centrifuge where the platelets are separated from other elements of the blood. The PRP is then injected into the treatment area, stimulating the work that the body is already doing.

Efficacy and Safety of Low-Level Laser Devices for Hair Growth

3 Signs You’re Ready for a Hair Transplant

When it comes to hair loss solutions, one size definitely does not fit all. Depending on several factors unique to each patient, including the underlying causes, nature, and progression of hair loss, your hair restoration doctor may recommend one of several different treatment options, including hair transplant surgery. But your physician won’t suggest a transplant as the best solution for you unless he or she believes that you are ready to undergo the procedure and have the characteristics that make you a good candidate for the surgery.

If you are considering taking action to address your hair loss issues and concerns, here are three signs that you may be ready for hair transplant surgery:

  1. You’re old enough. Many people start to experience hair loss at a young age; even children and teenagers can see the early signs of permanent hair loss. But while young people are still growing and maturing, the full extent and pattern of their hair loss may not be discernable. For hair loss surgery to deliver optimal results, the physician must be able to identify the individual patient’s unique hair loss pattern, so that he or she may transplant hair to the balding and thinning areas in a way that leaves behind a natural-looking hairline. That is why we only recommend a transplant as a potential treatment for individuals 18 and older, though we may suggest waiting even longer in some cases.
  2. You have enough donor hair. You can’t have hair transplant surgery unless you have hair to transplant. Unlike organ transplants, hair transplants involve the use of your own hair. We take hair follicles from areas on the back or sides of your head and transplant them to the treatment area, where they will continue to grow. Both male and female hair replacement candidates need robust hair growth in the donor area at the back of the head for transplant surgery to be a viable treatment for hair loss.
  3. Your hair loss is permanent. Not all hair loss is forever. Sometimes, excessive hair shedding is a seasonal or temporary issue caused by factors such as stress, hormonal changes, and other environmental or biological factors. If your doctor’s assessment is that your hair loss fits this category and that healthy hair growth is likely to resume, a transplant is not an appropriate choice for addressing the issue. Hair transplant surgery is reserved for those suffering from permanent hair loss, such as male pattern baldness.

New Study Shows Hair Transplants May Cure Migraines

New Study Shows Hair Transplants May Cure Migraines

New Study Shows Hair Transplants May Cure MigrainesHair transplant surgery performed by a skilled and experienced medical professional is a safe and effective way to address hair loss and restore hair to a full, natural-looking state. The benefits of a hair transplant manifest themselves in many ways: improved appearance, increased self-confidence, and the satisfaction that comes from having taken action to enhance your overall well-being. But a recent study suggests that the benefits of a hair transplant may extend far below the surface of the scalp to relieve a much more serious and debilitating problem: migraine headaches.

Anyone who suffers from migraines understands how disruptive and painful they can be. These piercing headaches can severely diminish the quality of life and productivity, and cause sufferers to incur significant treatment costs. Millions of people worldwide experience migraines on a regular basis, with women making up three of every four cases.

Effective treatments have been elusive, though surgery has been found to be increasingly effective. The new study, published in late 2017 in the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, looked specifically at the impact that hair transplant surgery had on patients who were afflicted with regular migraine headaches. As the researchers put in their report, “the postoperative improvement each patient experienced was dramatic.”

Researchers from the SO-EP Aesthetic & Plastic Surgery Clinic in Turkey studied six patients who suffered from migraines and underwent hair transplants between January 2011 and May 2012. These patients, all of whom had tried pain-relieving medication with no success, experienced migraines for six days a month on average, with the pain lasting around four hours. They rated their pain between five and eight on a scale of 1-10.

After hair transplantation, each migraine sufferer was checked once in the first month and then once every 3 months. Migraine headaches had ceased in all six patients, none of whom used medical treatments for migraines thereafter.

While the researchers noted that “the seemingly curative effect of hair transplantation on migraine headaches has no clear explanation as yet,” the conclusion that such surgery can diminish or even eliminate migraines was unavoidable.

“Results were decisive in these few patients. It is remarkable that both an alopecia and migraine headache may be easily remedied through a simple and easily applied procedure,” the report states.

Hair Transplant Gets Celebrity Endorsement from Wes Welker

The Hair Restoration Journey Series: What to Expect on Surgery Day

Hair Transplant Gets Celebrity Endorsement from Wes WelkerThe big day is here. You wake up, feeling a lot of excitement and a maybe a little bit of nerves about what lies ahead. Today is the day of your hair transplant surgery, and the first day of the rest of your life with a head of hair on its way to the full, natural, and youthful look you once had.

You’ve had the consultations, discussed the best approach with your hair restoration physician, taken the steps he or she advised to get your ready for your surgery and now it’s time to head to the clinic. What can you expect on this important day in your hair restoration journey?

First things first: get up and have a healthy, light breakfast unless instructed otherwise. While you can drive yourself to the clinic, you will need to arrange for a ride home because of the light sedation you will be under during the procedure. As such, it may be easier for a friend or family member to give you a lift to the clinic as well.

When you arrive, the staff should do everything they can to make you feel you comfortable and at ease. You will meet with your surgeon who will discuss with you what exactly will take place during your procedure, even if they have done so previously. Feel free to ask your doctor any questions you may have. Your surgeon is committed to making your hair restoration surgery as successful as possible, and that includes keeping you informed as to what is about to occur.

You will then settle in to your surgery suite, which is designed to be a welcoming and relaxed rather than cold and sterile environment. You will experience minimal, if any pain during the procedure. A technician will massage your scalp prior to administering local anesthesia, like the kind a dentist uses. The massaging creates a vibration in the skin that works in combination with the anesthesia to reduce any discomfort. You will also be given a mild sedative at the beginning of the session to minimize any anxiety you may be feeling.

During the procedure, you can either rest, listen to music, or watch movies or TV on your phone, tablet or other device. Your procedure will likely take several hours; the exact duration of your surgery will depend on the number of grafts being transplanted. For a 2000 graft case, the average time is about 6 hours.

After your surgery, your physician will give you detailed aftercare instructions to help you heal and get you back to your routine as quickly as possible, which is often the very next day. Make sure you get clarification on any instructions which may be unclear to you.

As noted, since the procedure involves the use of a mild sedative, you should arrange to have a friend or family member drive you to our office and pick you up after the procedure. We welcome drivers to wait in our reception area, or they may visit the Village of Merrick Park, located just across the street from our Institute.

When you return home that evening, you can sleep well knowing that you have taken a huge step to improving your appearance, confidence, and well-being.

How Typical is Shock Loss After Hair Transplant Surgery?

Shock Loss After Hair SurgeryHair transplant surgery involves the pinpoint and meticulous extraction of follicles from the donor area of the scalp followed by an equally detailed and careful process of transplanting those follicles to parts of the scalp where they can grow and flourish. As with any other surgical procedure, there is the potential for minor complications to arise. In relatively rare instances, the very process of restoring a full head of hair can actually lead to the loss of some healthy hair in the days or weeks after surgery. Known as “shock loss,” this phenomenon involves the loss of some follicles in and around the donor and transplant areas but is no cause for alarm. Effecting less than 5% of all hair transplant patients, shock loss is temporary and any lost hair should reappear in short order.

What is “Shock Loss”?

No matter how skilled your hair transplant surgeon is, no matter how gentle he or she is in extracting and transplanting your hair follicles, a hair transplant involves a lot of disruption of the donor and recipient areas of your scalp. This stress on the scalp can interfere with normal hair growth and result in the loss of otherwise healthy hairs from either the donor site or the site of the transplant.

For example, during a follicular unit extraction (FUE) transplant, we remove follicular units one-by-one. Donor hairs are removed with a one-millimeter punch device and the procedure is abetted with a head positioning device to minimize movement. As precise and advanced as this process is, the removal of donor hairs can impact nearby follicles and this trauma can cause them to fall out after the procedure.

Shock loss can also occur in the recipient area where the hair grafts are being transplanted. The incision process (making the places for the grafts) can implicate neighboring follicles and cause them to go into a resting phase and ultimately fall out.

No Cause for Alarm

Obviously, seeing healthy hair fall out after you have gone through the effort and expense of hair transplant surgery can be disconcerting. But shock loss is a temporary phenomenon. Most healthy hair that falls out due to shock loss will regrow in a matter of months after your procedure, appearing as it did before.

While not “shock loss,” transplanted hairs (as opposed to neighboring, healthy hair) may also “fall out” in the first few weeks after surgery. This is normal. The hairs will recycle and begin growing in about three to four months.

As noted, shock loss after hair transplant surgery is very much the exception and not the rule. Nevertheless, you should be aware of the potential for this minor side effect when you consult with your hair transplant surgeon prior to undergoing your procedure.

15 Questions to Ask Your Hair Transplant Surgeon

If you’ve made the decision to take action about your hair loss, congratulations. You’ve made a choice to improve your confidence and overall sense of well-being by restoring your hair to its full, natural appearance. But once you’ve made that choice, many others follow, and no decision is more important that picking the right hair transplant surgeon.

In South Florida, or almost anywhere else for that matter, there is no shortage of doctors, clinics, or other companies and facilities that hold themselves out as being the solution to your hair loss concerns. A quick Google search will make that more than clear. You’ll also discover that there are a wide range of surgical and non-surgical treatment options. The amount of information out there can be overwhelming. How can you know where to turn? If you are considering hair transplant surgery as an option, how do you know that the person you are considering for your treatment has the education, experience, and combination of technical know how and artistic skill to get you the results you are looking for?

It all starts with asking the right questions. If you are researching hair transplant surgeons, it is likely you are doing so for the first time. It may be the first time you’ve looked for a surgeon of any kind. When you have your initial consultation regarding hair loss treatment, the first thing to ensure is that you are meeting with a doctor, not simply a “consultant.” Then, consider asking some or all of these 15 questions:

  1. How many years of hair transplant surgery experience do you have?
  2. How many hair transplant surgeries have you performed?
  3. Did you have residency training in dermatology or surgery?
  4. Where did you get your medical/hair transplant surgery training?
  5. Are you an MD?
  6. Are you board certified? If so, with what board?
  7. Do you publish or give presentations about hair transplantation surgery?
  8. What kind of hair transplant surgeries do you perform?
  9. How do you decide which procedure is right for me?
  10. Do you charge by the procedure, by the follicular unit, or by the follicle?
  11. Do you offer payment plans?
  12. If I’m not from the South Florida area, can you offer an evaluation or quote without an office visit or do you offer travel plans for non-Miami residents?
  13. Do you have before and after pictures that can show me the results of your work?
  14. Are there former patients I can speak with to see their results and hear about their experience?
  15. Why in your opinion are you the right hair transplant surgeon for me?

By asking the right questions – and getting satisfactory and thorough answers from an experienced hair transplant surgeon – you can make the right choice and be well on your way to restoring your hair and appearance.

Treatment for Individuals with Alopecia Areata is Promising

How Long do FUE Hair Transplants Take to Heal?

Hair Transplant surgery Hair transplant surgery, like any other surgical procedure, involves some degree of recovery time and limitations on activities in order to properly heal. One of the many benefits of the Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant technique – developed and implemented by the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami’s Dr. Paul Rose – is that healing tends to be quicker and involve less post-operative limitations than other hair transplant methods.

The FUE Technique

During a FUE transplant, we remove follicular units one-by-one. Donor hairs are removed with a one-millimeter punch device and the procedure is abetted with a head positioning device to minimize movement. With FUE, patients can completely avoid a more obvious linear scar. Instead, scarring occurs in a dot-like pattern and is virtually undetectable after healing and regrowth.

With FUE, the donor area heals faster than with traditional methods and there is almost no postoperative pain. The minimal scarring means that patients can wear their hair quite short (but not completely shaven) without any evidence that a procedure has been done.

Post-Procedure Care and Healing

Since a mild sedative is used during the procedure, you’ll stay around for a short rest period after completion. You should also arrange for someone to take you home and plan on resting for the remainder of the day.

The day after the procedure, we will want you to return to our offices to have the transplanted areas checked and shampooed. That said, you should also be able to return to work that day and resume all of your regular activities within a week to 10 days.

Some patients experience crusting and mild redness in the recipient area which can last 7-10 days. Many patients can hide these crusts by combing the adjacent hair over the transplanted site, or by wearing a hat. Topical solutions can also be applied after the procedure to accelerate the separation of the crusts.

It is normal for the transplanted hairs to “fall out” in the first few weeks. The hairs then recycle and begin growing in about three to four months. The results are often not visible for six months or slightly longer with final results apparent at 12 months. The results are permanent.

The Patient’s Perspective: The Real Doctors Are Listening

Video Transcript

Dr. Rose: You gave a great talk. I thought it was a great lecture, and it points to the fact that we often miss how to take care of patients. The fact that you had that survey that talked about what patients perceive. And I will tell you– and I’m not blowing smoke here. When I had gotten back from that meeting, and I had written down some of the things that you had said, some of the comments that patients had about how they were treated. I immediately got back and said to my staff, [and] asked them to put in to print the questions that patients felt they were not being asked. And if we did ask those questions, to make sure that not only the people who consult for me, but we as physicians, Dr. Nusbaum and I, speak to that patient particularly about those issues. In particular, I think you had mentioned asking the question, ‘How is your hair loss affecting you emotionally, in your social situation, in your lifestyle?’ And I think for the most part, patients are very welcoming to get that question and have an opportunity not so much to vent, but to just say, ‘This is what’s bothering me about my hair.’ There are some people who don’t really want to talk about it, we learned. But there were questions you brought up that we immediately put into place.

Spencer Kobren: Well, I appreciate that. And my whole thing is really about creating the best possible patient experience. When patients come to me, and they say, ‘You know what, it doesn’t even seem like the doctor cared. All they wanted to do was make that sale, get me in the chair, and get me out.’ And when I hear [about] guys, even from well known practices, who aren’t following up personally. Unless you’re doing 30 cases a day, and I don’t think that’s happening in most practices, it’s so easy to make a 2 minute phone call and say, ‘Hey, how are you doing? I just wanted to make sure everything is okay. I’m going to have so-and-so from my staff check-in on you tomorrow.’ All of the sudden, they realize, this doctor really cares. And I know you guys do that in your practice.

Dr. Rose: We try. Every patient has my cell phone number. We try to be very forthright with patients. If I think they are a good candidate, I tell them. If I don’t think they’re a good candidate, I’ll tell them, ‘Have you ever looked at yourself with your head shaved? You might be a Michael Jordan, you might be a Sean Connery. It could work really well for you.’ There’s a lot of stuff out there now about PRP, patients asking us about that. And there’s a lot of– to me– pseudo science related to some of these things. I try to be very careful about what I say to patients and what I think is accurate science about some of these things, which we do use. But, in any case, I thought that your lecture was very beneficial for all of us at the meeting. I did have some takeaways there that I put into place right away.
