Thinking About Robotic FUE?

Robotic follicular unit extraction (FUE) is a new approach to hair transplant that many men and women find to be a fast, comfortable, and effective way to recreate a natural head of hair. Whether suffering with pattern baldness or more diffuse thinning, robotic FUE hair transplant is a new and exciting The procedure takes traditional FUE a step further, leveraging the power of advanced robotics and digital imaging technology to conduct surgical hair restoration procedures with greater speed, accuracy, and precision than ever before.

So what is robotic FUE, and is it a choice that makes sense for you? In this article, we examine what makes this new approach one of the most talked-about options for male and female hair loss treatment.

Setting Records. This year, the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami became one of the first clinics in the country to extract more than 850 grafts per hour with the ARTAS System!

Robotic Hair Transplant in Miami

There are many reasons to love new robotic FUE technologies for hair transplant. Below are 5 of the biggest benefits, according to our staff and patients.

1. Greater consistency & accuracy. Guided by robotics and advanced digital imaging technology, the ARTAS harvests donor hair with greater consistency and accuracy compared to manual surgical transplant.

2. Minimally invasive. More accurate and consistent extraction means a more minimally invasive procedure overall. This promotes faster, fuller postoperative hair growth by reducing trauma to the scalp.

3. Virtually scar-free. Traditional micro grafting and strip harvesting transplant procedures are know to leave a linear scar that can be visible when hair is cut very short. With ARTAS, the FUE method of gathering donor hair leaves virtually no sign of extraction, giving most patients the ability to enjoy short hair with confidence.

Following hair extraction, the donor area exhibits virtually no sign of scarring, even when hair is “buzzed” short.

4. Touch up previous procedures. Maybe you’ve had a hair transplant before, and you are not satisfied with the overall look or visibility of postoperative scarring. With the ARTAS’s advanced method of donor hair identification and extraction, surgeons can quickly camouflage existing scars to give you a youthful, more natural looking head of hair.

5. Faster recovery with a natural looking end result. Greater accuracy, more precision, less trauma, and a natural end result. View the image below for a glimpse at how the “hair transplant robot” produces a natural end result.

Hair Loss Treatment Revolutionized by New Robotic Technologies

Hair-Loss-Treatment-Revolutionized-by-New-Robotic-TechnologiesThe ARTAS® System by Restoration Robotics™ has revolutionized the way male and female hair loss is treated. ARTAS is a “hair transplant robot” that enables surgeons to identify and extract donor hair for the procedure with micron-level precision, all while minimizing trauma to the scalp. Now, men and women who elect to have a surgical hair restoration procedure can enjoy beautiful results through a faster, more convenient, and less invasive treatment protocol.

Today, surgical hair restoration is soaring in popularity among men and women around the world. In the UK, surgeons reported hair transplant surgeries increased among women by about 82% in 2013 (i). On our side of the Atlantic, early 2014 was marked by a surge in facial hair transplants among young adult men (ii). Most recently, robotic FUE has taken the spotlight as one of the newest and most exciting achievements in hair loss treatment.

ARTAS® in the Media

The ARTAS® System continues to garner media attention as a clinically-validated hair loss treatment option that has both FDA approval and a well-documented record for success.

Wendy Lewis, President of Wendy Lewis & Co Ltd Global Aesthetics Consultancy, explores the new technology and positive publicity in recently published article titled Robotic Surgery Revolutionises the Treatment of Hair Loss. In the article, Ms. Lewis interviews the Hair Transplant Institute’s very own Dr. Paul Rose to get his take on the ARTAS® System, robotic FUE, and patient satisfaction with the new technology.

“In large part the robotic procedure is meeting patient expectations,” Dr. Rose explains (iii). “Patients are pleased with the healing of the wounds and the ability to wear their hair shorter than they might be able to with a strip harvest.”

What is Alopecia Barbae?

What is Alopecia BarbaeThe condition alopecia barbae is a very specific form of alopecia, or hair loss. Whereas traditional alopecia areata describes a condition in which hair loss occurs throughout the body, alopecia barbae describes hair loss that occurs in the beard. For this reason, alopecia barbae is noticeable only amongst men, as lower levels of testosterone in women typically prevent the formation of facial hair (specifically beards) altogether.

November is the perfect time to raise awareness for this unique condition, as this month ignites the launch of two body-hair-awareness movements that rally the world together in admiration of beards, mustaches, and other exceptional displays of follicular assets. The first campaign is No Shave November; the second is Mustache November, or Movember for short.

No matter which movement you identify with, these two awareness campaigns give participants a platform to showcase their beards and natural hair growth. As the month progresses, participants gather donations from friends, family, and curious individuals from across the globe, all to benefit charities of their choice.

Bald Patches in Beards

It may shock the masses, but bald patches in beards are common among men. Bald patches can appear under the chin as well as throughout the sides of the neck, cheeks, and along the upper lip/mustache region.

Are Beard Transplants an Option?

Beard transplants are indeed an option for men who wish to reverse the signs of thinning or balding patches. In fact, British surgeons report seeing a surge in men requesting surgical beard restoration over the past year (i). In the UK, hair transplant is reported as the most common form of cosmetic surgery for men. Men seeking beard transplants often inquire about a specific look, referencing the famous facial hair of Hollywood A-listers like Brad Pitt.

How Does a Beard Transplant Work?

A beard transplantation procedure works in much the same way as transplant procedure that is performed to restore the scalp. Things begin with a hair loss consultation, during which the patient meets with a qualified hair loss professional to determine the likely cause of hair loss and plan an effective treatment regimen.

After making sure the patient is a candidate for a beard transplant, the surgeon will specify a donor area from which hair will be extracted for the procedure. The donor area typically resides along the rear or side regions of the patient’s scalp, areas known to provide quality donor hair with little threat of balding in the future.

Once hair is extracted, surgeons transplant individual follicular units to restore bald areas and create a natural-looking beard.

Hair Loss Treatment 2013: What’s New at the Miami Hair Institute

hair-loss-treatments-2013-miamiAt the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami we are always striving to improve our patients’ results. Both Dr. Rose and Dr. Nusbaum have over 25 years of experience in the field of hair restoration providing a solid foundation and track record for evaluating the best new techniques available to you. We are very excited to tell you about some new developments which we have incorporated into our practice.

Robotic Hair Restoration

In addition to the strip harvesting technique, we also offer a donor harvesting method named FIT Follicular Isolation Technique (also known as FUE). Using this technique the creation of a linear donor scar is eliminated. While this procedure has gained recent popularity, Dr. Rose has been performing it for over ten years with a special, hand-held motorized instrument and we continue to offer the hand motorized FUE . We also offer the ARTAS physician guided robotic system for FUE, FIT which is the most technologically advanced instrumentation worldwide. The ARTAS robotic instrument utilizes advanced digital technology and laser guided precision robotics to harvest permanent hair from the back of the head to be transplanted into balding or thinning areas. This is a minimally invasive procedure, with no linear scarring and less postoperative pain.  ARTAS produces tiny dot- like scars in the donor area that are not visible with a short haircut although complete shaving of the head would reveal them. We believe the best candidates for this procedure are individuals who have never had a strip harvest procedure and wish to have transplants done yet want  be able to wear their hair quite short  with minimal evidence  of a procedure .

Biolife

Donor follicles, once harvested, must be maintained in a viable state until they can be re-implanted in the recipient area; and the entire process must take place within hours. The standard liquid solution, which has been used for years to hold follicular grafts during surgery, is saline water. Although this has been effective, we are now utilizing a product called Biolife, which is equivalent to the solutions that are used to preserve organs for transplantation.  Preserving your follicles in Biolife further ensures that they will remain viable during the procedure. In our experience, it has increased follicle growth while at the same time, producing earlier growth than what we were getting with standard methods. Biolife contains nutrients that mimic the natural environment of the follicle cells within the tissues therefore minimizing the stress that the follicles must endure during the transplant process.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP is prepared by drawing a small amount of your own blood at the time of the procedure. We then utilize a special method to concentrate your platelets, the latter which contain numerous growth and healing factors. PRP is injected into both the donor and recipient areas once they are already anesthetized and accelerates healing as evidenced by less redness and crusting in these areas.  PRP may also improve the percentage of growth of transplanted follicles. We recommend PRP for all procedures but particularly for patients who have had previous transplants. In our experience patients who use PRP develop much less inflammation at the surgical sites, heal quicker and, although we have not scientifically studied this, may have improved hair growth.

EXPAREL

Although the vast majority of our patients experience very little discomfort, requiring pain medication only during the first 24 hours post-op, we are always looking to improve the patient experience. Exparel is a new long-lasting local anesthetic that is contained in liposomes which act as a timed-release system.

To reduce your discomfort after the procedure, Exparel is injected into your donor area during the surgery and is specifically designed to release the anesthetic gradually, controlling postoperative pain for up to 48 hours.

ARTAS® Hair Transplant Robot in Miami

At the end of 2012, the Hair Transplant Institute became 1 of fewer than 20 hair restoration clinics nationwide to offer the ARTAS® robot for FUE procedures. Since that time, the new technology has received a warm welcome from the men and women who visit our clinic for hair loss consultation and treatment.

There are many reasons why patients—both men and women—love the new ARTAS® system. A few include:

  • Greater Precision: The ARTAS® calculates and re-calculates vital metrics for donor hair extraction with micron-level precision at up to 50 times each second. As a result, donor hair is extracted with maximum potential for survival and natural growth.
  • Improved Accuracy: With high-resolution imagery and a precision-based robotic arm, surgeons are able to locate and extract donor hairs with greater accuracy than ever before. This improves the survivability of follicular units during the procedure, and it keeps the donor area looking natural post-procedure.
  • Comfort: ARTAS® is minimally invasive, and the procedure involves less pain and discomfort than a trip to the dentist.
  • No Linear Scar: Since the ARTAS® utilizes FUE, donor hairs are extracted and transplanted without creating a linear donor scar. As a result, patients are free to wear short hair cuts without showing scars or other signs that a transplant has been performed.
  • Physician Assisted: During the procedure, a trained surgeon uses the robotic technology to assist in identifying and extracting donor hair. Following extraction, hair is expertly implanted by hand to restore areas of thinning or balding scalp. If the thought of a robot performing a procedure on your scalp seems scary, you may rest assured that you are always in the caring and highly skilled hands of an expert surgeon at our Institute.
