Is It Possible to Reverse a Hair Transplant?

The world-renowned hair restoration surgeons at the Miami Hair & Skin Institute have helped thousands of patients turn back time by reversing the toll that it takes on their once-robust and full heads of hair. For the overwhelming majority of our hair transplant surgery patients, this is the first time they are undergoing the procedure. By providing exceptional results, we endeavor to make it the last time as well.

Sometimes, however, patients come to us after they’ve undergone a transplant that fell far below their expectations or left them with results that look unattractive or obvious. Usually, this is the result of a surgeon who lacked the skill, talent, and experience to perform the procedure correctly, leaving the patient thousands of dollars poorer and with a transplant that causes more embarrassment than pride.

Many of these individuals, if given a chance, would rather return to the appearance they had before their botched transplant than live the disappointing results of their surgery. That is where hair transplant reversal comes in.

Why Do Patients Want to Reverse a Hair Transplant?

Reasons why patients may seek to reverse a hair transplant include:

  • Large or poorly transplanted grafts to the frontal hairline that appear like “hair plugs” or “doll hair”
  • A frontal hairline the surgeon placed too far forward
  • The surgeon put transplanted hair in the wrong direction
  • Prominent scarring in the donor and extraction areas of the scalp

Goals of A Hair Transplant Reversal

The objective of most hair transplant reversals is to make the person look like they never had hair transplant surgery in the first place. This can involve some of the same techniques we use in initial hair transplant surgery to replace hair from the donor area or to camouflage scarring.

While a hair transplant reversal can certainly resolve many of the disappointments that come from an earlier, subpar procedure, these efforts may not achieve the goals you had for your initial surgery. That is why it is so important to get it right the first time. Whether you are seeing us for your first hair transplant procedure or to improve on a previous one, our goal is always the same: to provide you with an exceptional patient experience and results that leave you beyond satisfied.

Can a Hair Transplant Be Reversed?

Can a Hair Transplant Be Reversed?

At the Miami Hair & Skin Institute, our exceptional hair restoration surgeons have helped thousands of men and women reverse the toll that time, genetics, and other factors have taken on their once-full heads of hair. We perform hair transplants using the utmost skill, care, and precision, as well as the most advanced technology, to produce the results that leave our patients extremely satisfied with the outcome of the procedure. The vast majority of our hair transplant surgery patients are undergoing a transplant for the first time, and it is our goal to make it the last time as well.

Sometimes, however, we meet with patients who have already had a hair transplant that fell far below their expectations. This is usually because the surgeon they initially visited lacked the qualifications or talent to do the job correctly.  The patient is then left with results that look obvious and unattractive. Given the opportunity, many of these patients would prefer that their hair (or lack thereof) appear as it did before the disappointing transplant or that the initial results be improved.  That is where hair transplant reversal or repair comes in.

Why Do Patients Want a Hair Transplant Reversed or Repaired?

Reasons why patients may seek a hair transplant reversal or repair include:

  • Large or poorly transplanted grafts to the frontal hairline that appear like “hair plugs” or “doll hair”
  • A frontal hairline the surgeon placed too far forward
  • The surgeon put transplanted hair in the wrong direction
  • Prominent scarring in the donor and extraction areas of the scalp

If the issue is unnatural looking “doll hair,” this can often be repaired by removing the hair, dissecting them into smaller grafts, and then re-transplanting them into the scalp. Our surgeons may also perform a new follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure to obtain additional donor hairs they can transplant to the recipient area to further increase the full and natural appearance of the transplant. We can also use FUE to transplant hair to areas where scarring has occurred to camouflage those scars.

Hair Transplant Reversal v. Repair

If the goal of hair transplant repair is to make the hair and scalp appear as it should have if the initial surgery was performed correctly, the objective of a hair transplant reversal is to make things look like the person never had hair transplant surgery in the first place. This can involve the same techniques described above to replace hair from the donor area or to camouflage scarring.

While hair transplant repair and reversal procedures can undoubtedly improve the results of a prior, poorly performed procedure, these efforts may not achieve the goals you had for your initial surgery. That is why it is so critical to get it right the first time. Whether you are seeing us for your first hair transplant procedure or to improve on a previous one, our goal is always the same: to provide you with an exceptional patient experience and results which leave you beyond satisfied.

Hair Transplant Repair and Hair Transplant Reversal

Difference Between Hair Transplant Repair and Hair Transplant Reversal

Hair Transplant Repair and Hair Transplant ReversalMost of our hair transplant surgery patients are undergoing the procedure for the first time. We endeavor to make it their last time as well. Our world-renowned surgeons are meticulous in performing hair transplants such that patients leave with their expectations exceeded and their hair full, robust, and natural-looking. Unfortunately, we also see patients who have already had a hair transplant elsewhere that fell far below their expectations and left them with a transplant that looks obvious or with unsightly scars. That is where hair transplant repair and hair transplant reversal procedures come in.

Hair Transplant Repair

When patients come in to discuss a hair transplant repair, it is because they are unsatisfied with the results of a previous procedure. They are looking for a procedure that will either get them results close to what they originally expected or for work which can conceal either the obviousness of their transplant or scars from their prior surgery.

Problems with earlier procedures which often are the reasons why people seek a hair transplant repair include:

  • Large or poorly transplanted grafts to the frontal hairline that appear like “hair plugs” or “doll hair”
  • A frontal hairline placed too far forward
  • Transplanted hair placed in the wrong direction
  • Scarring in the donor and extraction areas of the scalp

If the issue is unnatural looking “hair plugs,” these can often be removed, dissected into smaller grafts, and then re-transplanted into the scalp. A new follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure may also be performed to obtain additional donor hairs to be transplanted to the recipient area to further increase the full, natural look of the transplant. FUE can also be used to transplant hair to areas where scarring has occurred so as to camouflage those scars.

Hair Transplant Reversal

If the goal of hair transplant repair is to make things look like they should have after an initial procedure, the objective of a hair transplant reversal is to make it look like there never was hair transplant surgery in the first place. This can involve the same techniques described above to replace hair from the donor area or to camouflage scarring.

While hair transplant repair and reversal procedures can certainly improve the results of a prior procedure, they may not achieve the goals you had for your initial surgery. That is one reason why it is so important to get it right the first time. Whether you are seeing us for your first hair transplant procedure or to improve on a previous one, our goal is always the same: to provide you with an exceptional patient experience and results which leave you beyond satisfied.
