The ARTAS iX Robotic Hair Restoration System Upgrade in Detail

Everything You Need to Know About ARTAS iX

At the Miami Hair & Skin Institute, Our award-winning surgeons are renowned for their mastery in the field of hair restoration. But they are also committed to staying at the cutting edge of technological innovation.

Perhaps the best example of our leadership when it comes to the use of advanced technology has been our pioneering work with the ARTAS system, which provides unmatched precision in hair transplantation. We do approximately 200 ARTAS cases a year and are NUMBER ONE in the Eastern United States in procedures performed.

Now, we continue this proud tradition with the introduction of the latest advancement in precision hair restoration: the ARTAS iX™ Robotic Hair Restoration System. Our own Dr. Paul Rose, MD recently gave a presentation at the South Beach Symposium in Miami about this technology and how it dramatically moves the needle on how natural- looking the results of hair transplant surgery can be.

What is ARTAS iX?

ARTAS iX is the only hair restoration solution which utilizes machine-based vision, machine learning, and artificial intelligence to provide precise, minimally-invasive, repeatable harvesting and implantation functionality in one compact system. It is the first and only physician-assisted system that can dissect and assist in the harvesting of follicular units directly from the scalp, create recipient implant sites using proprietary algorithms, and implant the hair follicles into the designated sites.

The system is equipped with a 3D-camera stereoscopic vision system with improved 44-micron resolution and a 7-axis robot arm to deliver unmatched procedural analysis, precision, repeatability, and clinical workflow efficiency.

How is ARTAS iX Used in Hair Restoration Surgery?

When performing a follicular unit extraction (FUE) procedure with the ARTAS iX, the surgeon loads 25 harvested grafts at a time into rectangular cartridges. He or she will then insert the cartridges into the arm of the robot that implants the grafts directly into the scalp.

A significant advantage of using cartridges, rather than a manual technique, is that the grafts are more delicately handled, reducing the risk of graft injury. When surgeons implant grafts manually, they typically grasp the follicles by the bulb, or just below the sebaceous glands, and then bring them into the incision risking considerable damage to the follicles while doing so. With ARTAS iX, grafts are held at the epidermal end and then gently placed into the cartridge. This eliminates unnecessary and avoidable injury to the growth of the transplanted hair by avoiding the lower and mid-portions of the follicles.

The hair restoration physician uses the ARTAS iX to digitally create a recipient site plan that communicates directly with the robot. The surgeon programs the specific size, distribution, density, direction, and angle of the sites for the follicular unit grafts. The ARTAS iX’s vision system identifies where the grafts will be placed and leads the robotic arm into position. Once the system automatically orients itself over the patient’s recipient area, implantation begins. The ARTAS iX can implant up to 500 grafts per hour, making it as efficient as it is precise.

Hair Transplant Gets Celebrity Endorsement from Wes Welker

The Hair Restoration Journey Series: What to Expect on Surgery Day

Hair Transplant Gets Celebrity Endorsement from Wes WelkerThe big day is here. You wake up, feeling a lot of excitement and a maybe a little bit of nerves about what lies ahead. Today is the day of your hair transplant surgery, and the first day of the rest of your life with a head of hair on its way to the full, natural, and youthful look you once had.

You’ve had the consultations, discussed the best approach with your hair restoration physician, taken the steps he or she advised to get your ready for your surgery and now it’s time to head to the clinic. What can you expect on this important day in your hair restoration journey?

First things first: get up and have a healthy, light breakfast unless instructed otherwise. While you can drive yourself to the clinic, you will need to arrange for a ride home because of the light sedation you will be under during the procedure. As such, it may be easier for a friend or family member to give you a lift to the clinic as well.

When you arrive, the staff should do everything they can to make you feel you comfortable and at ease. You will meet with your surgeon who will discuss with you what exactly will take place during your procedure, even if they have done so previously. Feel free to ask your doctor any questions you may have. Your surgeon is committed to making your hair restoration surgery as successful as possible, and that includes keeping you informed as to what is about to occur.

You will then settle in to your surgery suite, which is designed to be a welcoming and relaxed rather than cold and sterile environment. You will experience minimal, if any pain during the procedure. A technician will massage your scalp prior to administering local anesthesia, like the kind a dentist uses. The massaging creates a vibration in the skin that works in combination with the anesthesia to reduce any discomfort. You will also be given a mild sedative at the beginning of the session to minimize any anxiety you may be feeling.

During the procedure, you can either rest, listen to music, or watch movies or TV on your phone, tablet or other device. Your procedure will likely take several hours; the exact duration of your surgery will depend on the number of grafts being transplanted. For a 2000 graft case, the average time is about 6 hours.

After your surgery, your physician will give you detailed aftercare instructions to help you heal and get you back to your routine as quickly as possible, which is often the very next day. Make sure you get clarification on any instructions which may be unclear to you.

As noted, since the procedure involves the use of a mild sedative, you should arrange to have a friend or family member drive you to our office and pick you up after the procedure. We welcome drivers to wait in our reception area, or they may visit the Village of Merrick Park, located just across the street from our Institute.

When you return home that evening, you can sleep well knowing that you have taken a huge step to improving your appearance, confidence, and well-being.

Hair Replacement Surgery Listed as Top Treatment for Hair Loss

4 Sophisticated Haircuts for Balding Men to Consider

Hair Replacement Surgery Listed as Top Treatment for Hair LossHaircuts are a routine aspect of personal grooming that individuals of all ages undergo. But when you’re balding, trims are more than troublesome. After working so hard to find a style that makes you feel comfortable despite a receding hairline or thinning crown, stepping into the salon or barbershop provokes immense apprehension and worry. What if an unfamiliar stylist fails to listen to your specific needs properly, or worse, exacerbates the appearance of balding? Luckily, with some foresight and communication, you can avoid a regrettable haircut and move forward with newfound confidence.

There’s no reason to fear a qualified barber – and it might be time to part with your trusty comb-over. Ask for these six sophisticated yet practical haircuts for balding and thinning scalps:

Buzz Cut

Perhaps the quickest and most straightforward haircut is the simple buzz cut. Longer hair tends to display thinning more prominently while an ultra-short cut disguises prominent balding. Because buzzcuts are universal, rest assured that there’s a slim chance of your final cut ending up drastically different than you imagined due to miscommunication or an overzealous stylist. If you trust yourself and have a steady hand, purchase some clippers and trim at home to save a few dollars each month.

Pushed Back

If you suffer from thinning around the hair line, try a pushed back look. Many men assume slicking hair back intensifies a withdrawn hairline, but this look makes the gap between your brow and hairline appear intentional. Keep hairs medium length around the front to brush them back with styling cream while trimming the temples to create a volumized shape. Don’t forget to purchase a high-quality pomade or hairspray to maintain that desired shape all day (or night) long.

The Caesar Cut

Made famous by George Clooney, the Caesar cut helps conceal recession by pulling short hairs forward to mimic the appearance of a youthful hair line. Make this hairdo slightly softer by angling the front instead of cutting straight across in a horizontal line. Use a styling cream to keep hairs in place throughout the day, but avoid hard gels which can lead to clumping or spiking.

Shaven

Embracing your balding while you wait for a hair restoration treatment to take effect can eliminate some of the embarrassment behind androgenic alopecia. Numerous men – even those without hair loss – choose to shave their head hair for a cleaner and sometimes more masculine look. To offset a clean-shaven scalp, and to avoid channeling Mr. Clean, let your facial hair grow out slightly for a scruffy style. Or, go with a tailored beard to channel the hipster within.

Male-Pattern Baldness Treatment in Miami

Preparing for Hair Transplant

How to Prepare for Hair Surgery

Preparing for Hair TransplantIf you are ready to begin preparing for hair transplant surgery, you have already scheduled a consultation with our team and chosen a physician-recommended procedure to restore your hair. If you have not scheduled a consultation, please contact the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami to learn more about surgical hair restoration for male and female pattern baldness.

This guide has been created to help patients prepare for hair transplant surgery. This guide is a general outline only; patients must always maintain strict adherence to the specific pre-procedure guidelines prescribed by physicians during hair transplant consultation.

Below, we cover basic pre-transplant procedures and tips to follow during the weeks leading up to your hair restoration procedure.

3 Weeks Before Transplant

Hair Transplant Consultation. During consultation, Dr. Nusbaum and/or Dr. Rose will provide an overview of the procedure, including how donor hair (follicular units) will be extracted and transplanted to the recipient (bald) area. At this time, you will also learn specifics on which daily medications are okay to continue taking, which must be discontinued, how long the hair transplant procedure will take, and more. Patients are asked to pay close attention to these details.

Patients will be briefed on additional substances to avoid, like nicotine and alcohol. Patients will also be advised to take specific vitamins and minerals to improve the body’s natural ability to heal, like vitamin C.

If you have any questions about pre-procedure preparation, please call our Institute at 305-925-0222.

1-2 Weeks Before Surgery

At 1-2 weeks prior to hair transplant, you will be contacted by our Patient Coordinator to review instructions for day of surgery. Our Patient Coordinator will be happy to answer any additional questions you may have. Also 1-2 weeks prior to procedure, patients are advised to adhere to the following:

  • Begin taking vitamin C as directed in consultation to bolster immune system
  • Cease use of nicotine, including cigarettes, cigars, chewing tobacco, nicotine gum, nicotine patches, electronic “e-cigarettes,” and other items containing nicotine. Nicotine restricts blood vessels and may hinder the healing process, so it’s important to stop using nicotine well before the procedure to ensure it is entirely out of your system.
  • Stop the use of alcohol, including beer, wine, liquor, and other spirits.

Pick Up/ Drop Off. Please arrange to have a friend or family member drive you to our office and pick you up after the procedure. The procedure requires the use of a mild sedative, after which patients are not permitted to drive. We welcome drivers to wait in our reception area, or they may visit the Village of Merrick Park, located just across the street from our Institute. There, visitors may enjoy more than 100 upscale cafes, restaurants, and high end shopping stores like Nordstrom, Gucci, and more.

Plan ahead. During your hair transplant consultation, you will be given estimates on how long the entire procedure will take. To be safe, we ask patients to maintain flexibility to accommodate for procedures that take longer than expected.

24 Hours Before Surgery

In the final 24 hours leading up to hair transplant surgery, patients are advised to adhere to the following:

  • Do not eat or drink anything after midnight, unless instructed otherwise.
  • Do not eat or drink anything during the day of surgery, unless instructed otherwise.

Feel free to shower, brush your teeth, and perform your ordinary morning routine. However, please do not use any hair gel, hair spray, hair conditioner, or make-up.

Hair Replacement Surgery Listed as Top Treatment for Hair Loss

Hair Replacement Surgery Listed as Top Treatment for Hair LossMen’s Fitness magazine is known for providing American males with expert insight on how to work hard, play harder, and look their absolute best. This month, the publication released a special article on the 6 best ways to reverse the signs of hair loss. Hair replacement surgery topped that list, with experts naming it the “best fix by far for replacing lost hair,” (i).

Today’s hair replacement surgery differs drastically from the original procedures on the 1980s, the article warns. Formerly, hair replacement produced results that resembled cornrows, giving the procedure the nickname “hair plugs.”

Today, however, hair replacement surgery has evolved into a highly refined procedure that creates results so natural, nearly 85% of people cannot tell when it has been performed (ii).

Surgical Hair Replacement for Men and Women

Today, men and women have two primary options for hair replacement surgery. The first is referred to as Strip Donor Procedure. The second is newer and more advanced, known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

Starting at the Beginning. Before a patient chooses between Strip Donor and FUE procedures, it is vital that a hair loss evaluation be conducted to diagnose the cause of hair loss and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

The Strip Donor Procedure vs. FUE

The Strip Donor Procedure is the older and more traditional of the two treatment protocols. Prior to the procedure, the surgeon identifies an area from which donor hair will be removed. Hair is then surgical removed in a long, thin strip.

Upon removal, the surgeon divides the strip of hair into small clusters of hairs, called follicular units. This process is one of the many nuances that make today’s transplant procedures more natural than those of the past. By dividing donor hair into small, almost microscopic clusters, hair can be transplanted with greater aesthetic detail that recreates the appearance of natural hair.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) differs from the Strip Donor Procedure in one major way: Donor hair is not surgically removed in a linear strip. Instead, individual follicular units are removed with a special punch instrument that measures between 1-2mm in diameter, which is about the size of the tip of a pen. The surgeon then transplants hair by hand, paying close attention to the patient’s natural hair density, undulation, thickness, and randomness.

There are 2 main reasons patients choose FUE over Strip Donor. Unlike traditional Strip procedures, FUE does not leave a linear scar following the extraction of donor hair. This enables patients to wear their hair shorter with almost no sign of scarring (though if the head is completely shaved, small, circular red dots might be visible). Second, FUE has a faster turnaround time compared to Strip procedures, mostly because extraction is less invasive. Whereas Strip procedures are associated with a recovery time of 10 days or more, patients are almost fully recovered from a FUE procedure after just 3-5 days.
