New Method of Producing Stem Cells Falls Short

New Method of Producing Stem Cells Proves WrongEarlier this year, a team of Japanese scientists released studies that amazed the scientific community with a new method of producing stem cells. The new method claimed to have transformed ordinary cells into adult stem cells— cells capable of undergoing further transformation into any cell in the body. Researchers remained skeptical, however, as the new process involving a straight forward acid bath seemed overly simplistic and inherently flawed.

The study was originally published by a team of researchers from Boston and Japan in the scientific journal Nature. Following publication, however, leaders in the scientific community took issue with the images used as evidence in the study. Soon thereafter, specific elements of the Methods section of the papers received intense scrutiny, with many critics alleging issues of plagiarism.

Too Good to Be True: Scientists Withdraw Recent Stem Cell Findings

In a statement issued during a press conference with The Japan News, researcher Teruhiko Wakayama said, “I’m no longer sure that the articles are correct.” Mr. Wakayama is one of the first researchers to ever clone a mouse, making his endorsement-turned-retraction a shock to many. Elaborating on the study, Mr. Wakayama explained to news agency NHK World that he felt the experiments were correct, however the credibility of the data used as preconditions for the experiment had come into question.

Moreover, it’s important to note that the original studies involved cells from animal subjects, specifically mice. Even if successful, scientists face significant challenges when using the same methodology to achieve the same results in humans.

Proven Hair Loss Treatments

In the wake of these now compromised study results, it appears science is not any closer to a stem cell hair loss treatment. Fortunately, there are a number of hair loss treatment protocols that have been proven effective for men and women.

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) Proves Successful in Reversing Hair Loss

Low-Level-Laser-Therapy-(LLLT)-Proves-Successful-in-Reversing-Hair-LossLow Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) has long been thought to trigger new hair growth by stimulating hair follicles by way of phototherapy. In essence, hair transplant professionals and researchers have reasoned that LLLT devices could induce change through specific wavelengths of light that cause change on the cellular level.

Through these adaptive changes, researchers believed dormant hair follicles could experience an awakening. According to their speculation, LLLT technology had the potential to induce the specific chemical reactions that stimulate natural hair growth. Until recently, the hypotheses that tried to make sense of the results that hair loss patients experienced from LLLT treatments were not backed by actual study. Until now.

Recent studies now prove LLLT for hair loss to be effective in growing new hair where once was only balding scalp. The discovery is exciting news for millions of American men and women who suffer with thinning, shedding, or balding.

LLLT Devices Demonstrate Ability to Regrow Hair

The past few years have seen many exciting developments in hair loss treatment. Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) has risen as a highly refined and effective surgery for producing an authentic head of hair, and 2013 saw the emergence of robotic FUE technologies designed to perform FUE with greater accuracy and precision than ever before. In the world of non-surgical hair restoration, a new study delivers equally exciting news for the millions of Americans who suffer with the social, personal, and professional side effects of hair loss.

In a study of 334 men and women, a popular LLLT comb device was found to stimulate all-natural hair growth after just 26 weeks of use. The test group consisted of 146 men and 188 women, but the results were not gender-specific. Both men and women experienced natural hair growth as a result of the LLLT treatment.

On average, participants saw just over 20 new hairs per squared centimeter of scalp following ongoing treatment from the FDA-approved LLLT device. Researchers believe the study shows LLLT effective in stimulating growth of new hair via phototherapy.

Candidates for LLLT Hair Loss Treatment

Who are primary candidates for LLLT hair loss treatment? In general, any man or women who wishes to treat thinning, shedding, or balding with a non-surgical hair restoration procedure is a candidate for LLLT*. Hair loss specialists may also recommend the use of LLLT in the following circumstances:

  1. LLLT is recommended for both men and women who are not viable candidates for a surgical transplant procedure.
  2. LLLT devices are useful for women who wish to treat thinning, shedding, or balding. Since pattern baldness appears in a more evenly distributed and diffused manner among female patients, popular at-home “laser hat” therapies are most popular because they discretely and conveniently cover the entire top and sides of the scalp.
  3. Under the supervision of a hair loss professional, LLLT devices can be used in conjunction with hair loss medications (Propecia, Rogaine, and others) as well as surgical hair transplant procedures. In these cases, LLLT exposure nurtures cellular proliferation via phototherapy to maximize natural results.

Dr. Rose Appointed to ISHRS Ad Hoc Committee on FUE Issues

Dr.-Rose-Appointed-to-ISHRS-Ad-Hoc-Committee-on-FUE-IssuesThe Hair Transplant Institute congratulates Dr. Paul Rose on his recent appointment to the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) Ad Hoc Committee for FUE Issues! Dr. Rose is lead hair transplant surgeon at our Institute, working closely with Dr. Bernard Nusbaum to provide evaluation, diagnosis, and surgical restoration for men and women who suffer with various types of hair loss.

Meet Dr. Rose. With more than 20 years experience in the field of hair loss research, diagnosis, and restoration, Dr. Rose is recognized worldwide for providing exceptional care and delivering authentic results. Dr. Rose is an active professional in the medical community. He is passionate about research, ongoing education, and attending international seminars on hair loss treatment and restoration. Along with Dr. Nusbaum, Dr. Rose’s research and expert medical opinion were recently published in the August 2013 edition of The Clinics, discussing new hair loss treatment technologies like low level laser therapy (LLLT), Platelet-rich Plasma (PRP) injections, and robotic FUE hair transplant.

About FUE Transplant

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is a highly refined method of surgical hair restoration. Using a small punch instrument measuring just 1-2mm in diameter, the surgeon carefully removes individual clusters of donor hair follicles. Because a punch instrument is used in lieu of “strip” harvesting, FUE does not leave a linear scar and generally causes less trauma to the scalp.

Robotic FUE technologies are now available to make the extraction phase of the hair transplant faster and more comfortable for the patient. Using high resolution digital imagery and advanced robotics equipment that makes measurements with micron-level precision, these “hair transplant robots” identify and carefully extract the fittest hair follicles for transplant. Following robotic extraction, the surgeon transplants each follicular unit by hand to recreate the appearance of a natural head of hair.

Hair Loss Evaluation

If you or a loved one suffers with hair loss, rest assured you are not alone. Statistics gathered by the American Hair Loss Association show that 2/3rds of men and nearly 30 million women likewise suffer with thinning, shedding or balding.

Hair Transplant Gets Celebrity Endorsement from Wes Welker

Hair Transplant Gets Celebrity Endorsement from Wes WelkerFormer New England Patriot Wes Welker has gone public about his recent hair transplant procedure, giving NFL fans and hair loss sufferers something to talk about this season.

Endorsements from professional athletes are nothing new for hair transplant surgeons and clinics. In Europe, Manchester United star Wayne Rooney has openly shared his professional struggle with hair loss, often making headlines for being the recipient of such a stellar new head of hair. According to reporters at Daily Mail UK, Rooney shaved his head over the summer, a move that showed onlookers that even with a military-style cut, the footballer’s hairline looks natural and shows no visible signs of post-operative scarring.

Celebs Endorse Transplant, Dispelling Myths About Hair Loss Treatment

For men and women, celebrity endorsements help to dispel the long-standing myths surrounding new hair transplant procedures. Unlike the “hair plugs” of the 1980s, today’s methods and technologies are highly refined and known to produce exceptional results. In fact, more than 80% of Americans cannot tell when a man or woman has received a transplant, according to a new study by the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS).

The days of unsightly hair plugs are long gone, and spreading awareness for today’s refined and natural-looking procedures has never been more important. It’s estimated that an alarming number of men—roughly 2/3rds—suffer with a hair loss condition, most commonly pattern baldness. Another 20 million or more women show signs of thinning or balding, often as the result of hormonal fluctuations, pregnancy, or menopause. For this growing population, hair loss can have a profoundly negative affect on personal, professional, and social life.

What Transplant Procedures Are Celebrities Trying?

Today, celebrities opt for one of two approaches to hair loss treatment. The first is non-surgical, which involves the use of low level laser therapy (LLLT) and hair loss drugs like Propecia® and Rogaine®. Follicular unit extraction (FUE) and the all-new ARTAS® System for hair transplant are two additional surgical procedures known to produce authentic and permanent results.

Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT): A non-surgical treatment option, LLLT devices use FDA-approved low level lasers to stimulate blood flow through the scalp and around the follicles. Increased blood flow is thought to induce phototherapy, increasing nutrient and oxygen delivery to spur natural hair growth.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): FUE is one of the newest and most refined methods of hair transplant surgery. During the procedure, individual donor hairs are harvested using a small punch instrument, leaving virtual no sign of post-operative scarring. Follicles are then transplanted to the recipient area by hand, giving the surgeon the ability to carefully recreate the patient’s natural hairline, density, and overall authentic appearance.

ARTAS® System: The first FDA-approved hair transplant robot, the all-new ARTAS® System uses advanced digital imaging and robotics technologies to assist surgeons in rapidly identifying the very best donor hair for FUE transplant. With ARTAS technology, transplant procedures are faster, more comfortable, and produce more authentic results.

Hair Transplant Surgery for Women Rapidly Increases in UK

Hair-Transplant-Surgery-for-Women-Rapidly-Increases-in-UKThinning, shedding, or balding scalp is more common among women than one might think. Statistics estimate that nearly 20 million American women suffer with these symptoms. In the United Kingdom, it’s reported that more than 60% of women likewise suffer with dwindling hair health. Female hair loss can be brought on by a number of things. Stress, genetics, and sometimes even particular styling techniques can all be leading contributors. Recognizing that hair is an essential element of appearance, confidence, and first impressions, women around the world are turning to surgical hair restoration to restore their hair to a more natural and youthful state.

Hair transplant procedures have a stigma that is not easily overcome. Often referred to as “hair plugs,” the traditional and relatively crude procedures of the 1980s still have hair loss sufferers convinced that transplants produce unsightly, embarrassing results. The tide is beginning to shift, however, as awareness is spreading for the near-perfect results that can be achieved through newer surgical techniques and technologies. This is perhaps most evident in the UK, where hair loss clinics report seeing a rise in the number of female patients seeking hair transplant surgery this year.

UK: Female Hair Transplant Procedures Increase by 82%

One English hair loss clinic reports an 82% increase in women seeking hair transplant this year when compared to 2011 (i). To hair loss professionals, the recent increase in female patients is largely attributed to better awareness for how treatable the condition really is. Hair transplant surgery, for example, is now performed in two unique ways that produce results so natural looking, 85% of Americans cannot tell that a procedure has been performed (ii).

Refined Techniques and Better Technologies

The first and most common hair transplant procedure is traditional called the “strip donor” procedure. This treatment option gets its name from the way donor hair is removed from the rear or side of the scalp. Surgeons remove donor hair in a long strip, and they separate it into groupings of about 1-3 hairs, or follicular units, under high-powered microscopes. Surgeons then transplant each follicular unit by hand, taking great care to recreate the patient’s natural hair density, undulation, thickness, and randomness.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) is another common technique for patients who suffer with hair loss. FUE procedures are the newest and most refined method of surgical hair restoration, and patients often report recovering from the procedure in as little as 3-5 days. To perform a FUE transplant, surgeons use a surgical instrument to remove follicular units individually, instead of via strip harvesting. The biggest advantage of FUE is the absence of a linear scar, which is sometimes visible if a patient who receives a strip donor procedure gets a very short haircut.

Celebrity Endorsement

In addition to newer and more refined transplant techniques, hair loss professionals credit celebrity endorsements for significantly reducing the stigma formerly attached to the procedure. In recent years, world-renowned athletes and entertainers have opened up about the transplant procedures that have helped them maintain a full and natural head of hair. In the UK, soccer star Wayne Rooney is perhaps the best-known example. In the U.S., the ageless hairlines of Hollywood stars like Mel Gibson, Jude Law, and Mathew McConaughey have sparked rumors that the celebrities sought help from surgeons to restore areas of balding scalp, ultimately creating a positive impression that has affirmed the quality, safety, and legitimacy of transplant procedures in America.

Hair Replacement Surgery Listed as Top Treatment for Hair Loss

Hair Replacement Surgery Listed as Top Treatment for Hair LossMen’s Fitness magazine is known for providing American males with expert insight on how to work hard, play harder, and look their absolute best. This month, the publication released a special article on the 6 best ways to reverse the signs of hair loss. Hair replacement surgery topped that list, with experts naming it the “best fix by far for replacing lost hair,” (i).

Today’s hair replacement surgery differs drastically from the original procedures on the 1980s, the article warns. Formerly, hair replacement produced results that resembled cornrows, giving the procedure the nickname “hair plugs.”

Today, however, hair replacement surgery has evolved into a highly refined procedure that creates results so natural, nearly 85% of people cannot tell when it has been performed (ii).

Surgical Hair Replacement for Men and Women

Today, men and women have two primary options for hair replacement surgery. The first is referred to as Strip Donor Procedure. The second is newer and more advanced, known as Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

Starting at the Beginning. Before a patient chooses between Strip Donor and FUE procedures, it is vital that a hair loss evaluation be conducted to diagnose the cause of hair loss and develop a comprehensive treatment plan.

The Strip Donor Procedure vs. FUE

The Strip Donor Procedure is the older and more traditional of the two treatment protocols. Prior to the procedure, the surgeon identifies an area from which donor hair will be removed. Hair is then surgical removed in a long, thin strip.

Upon removal, the surgeon divides the strip of hair into small clusters of hairs, called follicular units. This process is one of the many nuances that make today’s transplant procedures more natural than those of the past. By dividing donor hair into small, almost microscopic clusters, hair can be transplanted with greater aesthetic detail that recreates the appearance of natural hair.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) differs from the Strip Donor Procedure in one major way: Donor hair is not surgically removed in a linear strip. Instead, individual follicular units are removed with a special punch instrument that measures between 1-2mm in diameter, which is about the size of the tip of a pen. The surgeon then transplants hair by hand, paying close attention to the patient’s natural hair density, undulation, thickness, and randomness.

There are 2 main reasons patients choose FUE over Strip Donor. Unlike traditional Strip procedures, FUE does not leave a linear scar following the extraction of donor hair. This enables patients to wear their hair shorter with almost no sign of scarring (though if the head is completely shaved, small, circular red dots might be visible). Second, FUE has a faster turnaround time compared to Strip procedures, mostly because extraction is less invasive. Whereas Strip procedures are associated with a recovery time of 10 days or more, patients are almost fully recovered from a FUE procedure after just 3-5 days.

Hair Loss Treatment 2013: What’s New at the Miami Hair Institute

hair-loss-treatments-2013-miamiAt the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami we are always striving to improve our patients’ results. Both Dr. Rose and Dr. Nusbaum have over 25 years of experience in the field of hair restoration providing a solid foundation and track record for evaluating the best new techniques available to you. We are very excited to tell you about some new developments which we have incorporated into our practice.

Robotic Hair Restoration

In addition to the strip harvesting technique, we also offer a donor harvesting method named FIT Follicular Isolation Technique (also known as FUE). Using this technique the creation of a linear donor scar is eliminated. While this procedure has gained recent popularity, Dr. Rose has been performing it for over ten years with a special, hand-held motorized instrument and we continue to offer the hand motorized FUE . We also offer the ARTAS physician guided robotic system for FUE, FIT which is the most technologically advanced instrumentation worldwide. The ARTAS robotic instrument utilizes advanced digital technology and laser guided precision robotics to harvest permanent hair from the back of the head to be transplanted into balding or thinning areas. This is a minimally invasive procedure, with no linear scarring and less postoperative pain.  ARTAS produces tiny dot- like scars in the donor area that are not visible with a short haircut although complete shaving of the head would reveal them. We believe the best candidates for this procedure are individuals who have never had a strip harvest procedure and wish to have transplants done yet want  be able to wear their hair quite short  with minimal evidence  of a procedure .

Biolife

Donor follicles, once harvested, must be maintained in a viable state until they can be re-implanted in the recipient area; and the entire process must take place within hours. The standard liquid solution, which has been used for years to hold follicular grafts during surgery, is saline water. Although this has been effective, we are now utilizing a product called Biolife, which is equivalent to the solutions that are used to preserve organs for transplantation.  Preserving your follicles in Biolife further ensures that they will remain viable during the procedure. In our experience, it has increased follicle growth while at the same time, producing earlier growth than what we were getting with standard methods. Biolife contains nutrients that mimic the natural environment of the follicle cells within the tissues therefore minimizing the stress that the follicles must endure during the transplant process.

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP is prepared by drawing a small amount of your own blood at the time of the procedure. We then utilize a special method to concentrate your platelets, the latter which contain numerous growth and healing factors. PRP is injected into both the donor and recipient areas once they are already anesthetized and accelerates healing as evidenced by less redness and crusting in these areas.  PRP may also improve the percentage of growth of transplanted follicles. We recommend PRP for all procedures but particularly for patients who have had previous transplants. In our experience patients who use PRP develop much less inflammation at the surgical sites, heal quicker and, although we have not scientifically studied this, may have improved hair growth.

EXPAREL

Although the vast majority of our patients experience very little discomfort, requiring pain medication only during the first 24 hours post-op, we are always looking to improve the patient experience. Exparel is a new long-lasting local anesthetic that is contained in liposomes which act as a timed-release system.

To reduce your discomfort after the procedure, Exparel is injected into your donor area during the surgery and is specifically designed to release the anesthetic gradually, controlling postoperative pain for up to 48 hours.

ARTAS® Hair Transplant Robot in Miami

At the end of 2012, the Hair Transplant Institute became 1 of fewer than 20 hair restoration clinics nationwide to offer the ARTAS® robot for FUE procedures. Since that time, the new technology has received a warm welcome from the men and women who visit our clinic for hair loss consultation and treatment.

There are many reasons why patients—both men and women—love the new ARTAS® system. A few include:

  • Greater Precision: The ARTAS® calculates and re-calculates vital metrics for donor hair extraction with micron-level precision at up to 50 times each second. As a result, donor hair is extracted with maximum potential for survival and natural growth.
  • Improved Accuracy: With high-resolution imagery and a precision-based robotic arm, surgeons are able to locate and extract donor hairs with greater accuracy than ever before. This improves the survivability of follicular units during the procedure, and it keeps the donor area looking natural post-procedure.
  • Comfort: ARTAS® is minimally invasive, and the procedure involves less pain and discomfort than a trip to the dentist.
  • No Linear Scar: Since the ARTAS® utilizes FUE, donor hairs are extracted and transplanted without creating a linear donor scar. As a result, patients are free to wear short hair cuts without showing scars or other signs that a transplant has been performed.
  • Physician Assisted: During the procedure, a trained surgeon uses the robotic technology to assist in identifying and extracting donor hair. Following extraction, hair is expertly implanted by hand to restore areas of thinning or balding scalp. If the thought of a robot performing a procedure on your scalp seems scary, you may rest assured that you are always in the caring and highly skilled hands of an expert surgeon at our Institute.

Viviscal® for Hair Loss Review

Viviscal® for Hair Loss ReviewExcitement is met by skepticism as a new product for treating hair loss has been announced. Named Viviscal®, the new hair care regimen includes a set of oral supplements (pills), shampoos, and conditioners promoted as an effective means for rebuilding thicker and fuller hair.

But are the claims backed by reputable research, and will the product work? These are two critical questions that need answered prior to choosing any method of hair restoration– including both surgical procedures and non-surgical products.

Good Viviscal® Alternatives

One of the best alternatives to Viviscal® that hair care professionals recommend is Minoxidil. Minoxidil has been shown effective in stopping hair loss while also promoting new hair growth in some men and women since as early as 1980. Known widely under the brand name Rogaine®, Minoxidil first became approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the middle of the 1980s. A twice-daily topical treatment, Minoxidil offers ease-of-use and convenience that has garnered big sales as well as international acclaim amongst users, physicians, researchers, and hair/ health organizations.

In the 30+ years since Minoxidil has received its approval from the FDA, the hair loss treatment has undergone extensive testing in which the product has consistently produced results for both men and women. Hair loss professionals note that those who desire a more permanent solution to hair restoration ought to consider a surgical procedure, however.

Why Choose Surgical Hair Transplant Over Viviscal®?

There are many roadblocks that make it difficult for some patients to have confidence in surgical hair restoration. For one, patients fear receiving a poorly executed procedure that resembles the “hair plugs” of the 1980s. Other times, a patient might be concerned that the overall cost of the transplant procedure is too expensive. It’s also common for patients to assume that they simply do not have the time to have the procedure done, becoming overwhelmed with concerns over the time it takes to recover from a hair transplant.

However, today’s transplant procedures more faster, more convenient, and more natural looking than ever before. So natural, in fact, the International Society for Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) reports that approximately 85% of Americans cannot tell the difference between a transplanted area of scalp and an ordinary area that has not been restored by surgical means.

Today, there are 3 leading options for surgical hair transplant that offer patients incredible results:

Traditional Strip-Donor Transplant

Traditional “strip-donor” procedures are perhaps the most well-known of today’s contemporary hair transplant procedures. In this process, the scalp is anesthetized to virtually eliminate all pain and discomfort. Hair is then taken from the donor area via small strips, called “micro grafts.” These micro grafts are smaller and more expertly arranged than the “hair plugs” of the past, creating an end-result that is natural in appearance and, in most cases, permanent.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) Transplant.

FUE is a highly refined method of hair transplant that involves extracting donor hairs in clusters of 1-3 follicular units. A small “punch” instrument is used for extraction, eliminating the linear scar that is most often left behind by simpler strip-donor procedures. Because this more advanced method avoids linear scarring, patients are able to wear their hair much shorter.

ARTAS® Robotic FUE

ARTAS® is the most advanced method of FUE hair transplant. This system is the first-ever FDA approved “hair transplant robot,” enabling surgeons to conduct FUE procedures with greater accuracy, precision, and reproducibility. To learn more, visit this page about the ARTAS® hair transplant robot.
