Consider oils with UVA/UVB protection incorporated so you don’t end up with greasy strands full of thick, white sunscreen. These also protect the hair itself from the sun, which can fade color when it oxidizes.

To protect your scalp, you’ll want to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun and after every two hours of spending time outside. If you go swimming or are perspiring a lot, you will need to reapply the sunscreen that has been diluted or washed away by that moisture. Like many consumer products, shampoos can contain chemical preservatives which, while extending the shelf-life of the shampoo, don’t extend the life of your hair and in fact may do the opposite. Look for shampoos and other hair-care products that contain natural preservatives including essential oils such as eucalyptus, lavender, or rosemary, jojoba, Vitamin E, and grapefruit seed extract.
  • Shampoos containing castor oil and argan oil. Castor oil is effective at killing bacteria which can cause hair folliculitis and also has the added benefit of relieving pain and itching where applied. Argan oil is rich in natural phenols which are beneficial to the strength and resilience of hair follicles.

The Effects of Caffeine on Hair

For many people, coffee is as essential to daily life as water; there’s a reason you can find a Starbucks on every other corner. The eye-opening effects of the caffeine in a cup (or three) of java is the kickstart a lot of us need to start our day. But alertness or jitters aren’t the only way caffeine effects our bodies. Studies suggest that coffee and the caffeine it contains can have a positive impact on the health of our hair, strengthening follicles and reducing hair loss.

There are two primary ways that caffeine can have beneficial effects on hair health:

  • It’s rich in antioxidants. Healthy hair follicles start with healthy cells. Antioxidants are substances which stimulate and encourage healthy cell production by fighting biological byproducts known as free radicals. These free radicals can damage our cells and stunt hair growth. Since caffeine contains significant amounts of antioxidants, it can limit the damage free radicals cause to our hair follicles. If you are looking to up your antioxidant intake when ordering your next cup of coffee, look to darker roasts such as French Roast or espresso which contain higher levels of these healthy compounds.
  • It fights the chemical which can cause hair loss. Men and women who suffer from pattern baldness have a genetic sensitivity to a hormonal byproduct called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT shrinks hair follicles which ultimately stop producing viable hair to replace the hair that we all lose on a regular basis. A study published in the International Journal of Dermatology found that caffeine works by blocking the effects of DHT and that “caffeine alone led to a significant stimulation of hair follicle growth.”

Coffee, sodas, tea and other beverages are the way most of us get caffeine. But the study which found that caffeine can fight DHT involved applying caffeine directly to hair follicles. A similar study involved applying a shampoo containing caffeine, and many shampoos and other hair care products now contain caffeine and claim to promote hair growth. While these products are by no means a magic bullet for hair growth, they can be part of an overall effort to improve the strength of your hair follicles. However, before you decide to up your coffee intake or buy hair products containing caffeine, you should consult with a physician or experienced hair restoration professional.

Also called scalp folliculitis, this condition is common among both men and women. Luckily, there are several effective, affordable, and easy home remedies to relieve the discomfort and disruption of normal hair growth caused by scalp folliculitis.

 

Hair folliculitis is most commonly caused by the following:

  • Yeast
  • Fungus
  • Bacteria
  • Contact/rubbing from tight clothing

How Biotin Boosts Hair Health

However, few people understand how exactly biotin interacts with hair follicles for increased shine, volume and strength.

Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin that facilitates cellular metabolism, or the conversion of macronutrients like proteins and fats into energy needed for your body to run. Since you’re likely getting some amount of biotin in your everyday diet, hair loss caused by lack of vitamin B7 alone is uncommon. Nutritional deficiencies can cause telogen effluvium (TE) – a temporary form of hair loss that occurs due to malnourishment, stress or trauma. TE usually involves a pattern of nutritional shortages, including iron, vitamin D, vitamin C and omega-3s.

B7 doesn’t just encourage healthy growth but may increase your mane’s overall volume and thickness. The outer sheath connects to the arrector pili muscle, and when contracted, causes hair to stand up – an effect more commonly known as goosebumps.

At the base of the follicle is known as the bulb, where cells build and nourish the shaft. These cells are connected to tiny blood vessels, or capillaries, which deliver hormones and nourishment to sustain healthy hair growth. When your body’s hormones are off balance or shifting as you age, the cells can’t re-build new shafts to replace everyday shedding. This is a condition known as androgenetic alopecia, also called male-pattern baldness of female pattern hair loss (FPHL).

Meanwhile, the shaft is made of a hard protein called keratin. The hair you see on your head, arms or legs is dead and no longer nourished by the follicle and its cells. Although it’s not living, the shaft is convoluted. Sometimes, an inner layer called the medulla is present, but this portion only exists in certain types of hair. The middle layer (which everyone has) is called the cortex, containing pigment to help give your hair its natural shade. The outer layer is called the cuticle. Most everyday hair care products designed to smooth or soften hair target the cuticle. Cuticle structure varies based on your hair type which can affect hair’s appearance. For instance, people with curly hair have drier, dull strands because sebum has a difficult time traveling down the kinks of the cuticle to condition shafts properly.
