Anyone who has a lawn understands that if it is left covered in debris, leaves, pebbles, and such, the grass won’t grow as well – and may ultimately die. Why Exfoliate Your Scalp?

Scalp exfoliation involves a process much like the exfoliation of facial skin and serves many of the same purposes. Like our faces, our scalps produce oil, also called sebum. In the right amount, sebum can keep our skin moisturized and give our hair follicles a shiny appearance and soft texture. But too much sebum on the scalp can become a breeding ground for the malassezia furfur yeast that is a primary cause of dandruff. It can also cause flare-ups of seborrheic dermatitis.

Similarly, the gels, mousse, hairspray, and even dry shampoo that are part of styling routines can buildup on the scalp, just like makeup can accumulate on the face if not cleaned effectively. This layer of residue can clog hair follicles, which can ultimately lead to hair thing and loss. Those who only shampoo once a week or so are particularly susceptible to this problem.

What Is Involved in Scalp Exfoliation?

An increasing number of salons are offering scalp exfoliation on their menu of services, but it can be easily performed at home as well. The process usually involves gently but firmly buffing the scalp with a teasing brush to loosen the debris, followed by massaging an exfoliating scalp treatment into the dry scalp and hair for around 10 minutes. After that, you can shampoo, condition, and style your hair as you usually would.

Some People Shouldn’t Exfoliate Their Scalp

For most people, there is no downside to scalp exfoliation other than some additional time added to their hair care regime. If you use a large amount of product or are prone to perspiring or producing large amounts of oil, it’s probably a good idea.

However, spring brings with it an increase in hair loss. If you are planning on spending even a small amount of time in the sun, use scalp sunscreen. There are numerous sunscreen products specially formulated for application to the hair and scalp. Consider oils with UVA/UVB protection incorporated so you don’t end up with greasy strands full of thick, white sunscreen. These also protect the hair itself from the sun, which can fade color when it oxidizes. 

  1. Use Conditioner

2-in-1 shampoos and conditioners have become commonplace, but they don’t make common sense. Shampooing and conditioning are two separate processes that are at odds with each other. While shampooing opens up hair cuticles and releases product and dirt build-up, conditioning closes those cuticles and restores needed moisture into the hair shaft. Keep these two hair care regimens separate to maximize hair health

  1. Style Your Hair With Loose Up-Dos

With long hair, you may be tempted to pull strands back from the face. However, many slicked-back up-do’s cause tension on follicles. Over time, this tension and strain can lead to follicle shock and traction alopecia, which disrupts the natural cycle of growth. This condition is one of many that manifests as thinning or shedding hair.

Everyone needs to tie their hair back once in a while, but traction alopecia prevention is essential. 

If you want to pull your hair from the nape of your neck on a hot summer day or during exercise, opt for a loose up-do or bun. Avoid sharp bobby pins and rubber hair ties for a more natural, soft look. If you have heavier hair, pull strands back into a low bun or ponytail so the added lifted weight does not put additional strain on the scalp.

What Your Hair Can Tell You About Your Health

If you want to get a complete picture of your health, you’ll need a comprehensive physical exam, an array of tests, and the expertise of your doctor. But medical charts and lab results are not the only places you can get insights about your well-being. Your body has plenty of ways of telling you if something may be wrong. One way it does so is through the condition of your scalp and hair.

Often, differences in your’s hair’s condition don’t mean much beyond the fact that your genes or other environmental or lifestyle factors are causing you to lose hair.   • Thyroid problems. When our thyroid glands don’t work correctly, they can cause an array of health problems, including hair loss. Both hypothyroidism (production of too few hormones) and hyperthyroidism (production of too many hormones) can cause hair to fall out because of the impact these imbalances have on the development of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT). This hormone, a synthesized version of testosterone, plays a role in the development of sexual organs and secondary sexual characteristics, including physical appearance. Unlike testosterone, however, too much DHT disrupts the natural growth cycle of hair and can cause hair follicle shrinkage or elimination, resulting in shedding or thinning hair.
  • A lack of iron – anemia – is one of the chief causes of dietary-related hair loss. Low iron levels restrict proper blood flow – reducing the amount of growth-stimulating nutrients our follicles need. Iron-rich foods such as spinach, kale, broccoli, and other leafy greens can boost your iron intake and help feed your hair.

Can Stem Cell Therapy Replace Hair Transplants

Stem Cell TherapyStem cells are the multi-talented repairmen of our bodies, maintaining and restoring healthy functioning everywhere, fixing the body by dividing and replacing damaged tissues. For a number of years, stem cell research has held the promise of leveraging their power to promote healing and treat a wide range of ailments and issues. Now new stem cell efforts and techniques are showing that reintroducing an individual’s own stem cell back into hair follicles can create a nourishing environment which may foster regrowth and fight the battle against hair loss.

Multiple teams of researchers are currently working on stem cell hair loss therapies, and some techniques have advanced to the point such that they are being used effectively on patients suffering from hair loss, including stem cell therapy offered at the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami.

Minimally invasive, stem cell therapy for hair loss involves isolating a few ounces of adult stem cells from fat deposits in the abdomen, flanks, or love handles and reintroducing those cells to the scalp. A physician removes those fat cells from the patient’s midsection using a “mini” liposuction procedure. Before this approximately 20-minute-long outpatient procedure, the doctor will administer a mild oral sedative and local anesthesia, minimizing pain or discomfort.

Following the liposuction, the physicians performing the procedure will isolate the stem cells while you rest. Once isolated, the hair loss physician will inject the stem cells into targeted areas of the scalp, where they will start their work stimulating hair growth.

The whole procedure should last approximately three hours. As an outpatient procedure, patients can go home shortly after that. However, since mild sedation is involved, patients should arrange for someone else to drive them home. While there may be some mild soreness after the procedure, patients should be able to go back to work the next day.

It may take a few months before noticing results. Since this is a relatively new procedure, it is not yet clear how long results will last. However, the team at the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami is optimistic about the potential for long-term hair regrowth, particularly with ongoing treatment.

Research has found stem cell hair transplants can be an effective way of treating hair loss conditions such as:

Does WEN Cause Hair Loss?Nature v. nurture. It is the age-old debate about what makes us who we are. Is it what we were born with, is it the lessons we learn and the habits we develop, or is it a mix of both?

When it comes to hair loss, the genes you were born with – nature – play a dominant role in determining whether you will develop some of the most common hair loss conditions such as male pattern baldness and androgenetic alopecia. But the way you treat your hair and the hair care practices you use – nurture – can also affect the strength and health of your hair and impact whether you’ll suffer from hair loss.

Unfortunately, many of the ways we treat or style our hair to make it look the way we want it to can, over time, make our hair look a way we definitely don’t want it to. Try to avoid these damaging hair care practices so your hair stays healthy – and on your head:

  • Brushing and styling while wet. When your hair is wet, it is at its most vulnerable and more prone to damage. When you brush or comb your hair while wet, it can stretch your hair follicles and cause breakage. Blot your hair with a towel and wait for a bit before blow-drying or styling your hair.
  • Too much heat. Heat may help you dry and style your hair, but too much heat is a terrible thing for your hair. That flat iron can do wonders if you want to straighten your hair, but be mindful of how much heat you use; if the flat iron is too hot, it will make your hair follicles dry and brittle and result in hair breakage. Similarly, use a lower setting on your hair dryer or attach a diffuser to keep the heat from frying your follicles.
  • Tight hairstyles. Traumatic and traction alopecia are hair loss conditions that can arise if you apply constant tension and strain to your hair follicles through the way you style and wear it. When you keep hair follicles stretched to their breaking point they will, in fact, break and can eventually die and fall out. Avoid wearing unnecessarily tight ponytails, pigtails, or braids for an extended period or hairstyles that keep hair tightly wound for a prolonged time.
  • Product buildup. Gels, mousse, hairspray or other styling products do not inherently contribute to hair loss. But if you leave product in your hair too long without washing it out, it can cause damage which could lead to hair shedding. The key is washing your hair regularly to prevent styling products from contributing to any long-term buildup of sebum-based plaque which could lead to a condition called scalp folliculitis. Over time, the irritation that is the most prominent symptom of folliculitis may make it impossible for the hair follicle to support a normal hair growth cycle. This irritation can become so acute that it damages the hair follicle permanently.

How to Maintain a Healthy Scalp for Optimal Hair Growth

Healthy Scalp If you want to plant a beautiful, healthy, and lush garden, you won’t get very far if the soil is bad, if you don’t water the plants, or are otherwise inattentive. The same goes for your hair. If your scalp is unhealthy, that can have a direct impact on hair growth. And if you are already experiencing hair loss, taking good care of your scalp can help slow that shedding and keep what hair you have healthy and growing.

Here are six ways you can maintain a healthy scalp for optimal hair growth:

  1. Pump up the protein. Hair will not grow without sufficient protein in your body. Eggs, fish, and beef are great sources of protein, as are beans, lentils, and soy.
  2. Chill out. Stress can lead to physical problems, including weight loss, weight gain and hair loss. Overproduction of stress hormones promotes adrenal fatigue, which occurs from the overproduction of cortisol in the body. That overproduction leads to the underproduction of hormones like aldosterone and androgens, resulting in thinning or balding hair. Find a way to alleviate stress that works best for you.
  3. Get some sleep. Sufficient sleep is an essential part of overall health, as our bodies expend a lot of energy every day and need time to recharge so the body can function as it is supposed to. One function is repairing and regenerating hair follicles. A lack of sleep keeps that from happening, causing hair to stop growing, weaken, and eventually fall out more than it otherwise would.
  4. Eat Healthily. To stop and prevent hair loss, be sure to maintain a well-rounded diet rich in protein, biotin, vitamin E, vitamin A, and other important nutrients.
  5. Keep the water flowing. Going back to that garden analogy, water is as important to healthy hair as it is to healthy plants and flowers. Hair is one of the first parts of the body to show the effects of water, vitamin, and mineral deficiency. Hair shafts are made up of approximately 25 percent water, and lack of moisture causes the shaft to weaken. Make a conscious effort to push fluids – at least 64 ounces of water per day – to keep your thirsty hair from drying out.
  6. Keep the UV rays out. Balding individuals or those with thinning hair are particularly vulnerable to sunburn on the scalp. Too much sun can turn your hair brittle, dry, and more prone to breaks and splits. Additionally, sunburn on the scalp can not only be the result of having areas of thinning or absent hair, it can also cause hair loss, at least temporarily. Protect your scalp with scalp sunscreen or a hat, especially in the summer.

How to Prevent Sunburn on Your Scalp

scalp folliculitisSummer’s here, and the time is right for being out in the South Florida sunshine. We are lucky in that sunny days are abundant throughout the year here, but during summertime, the sun’s rays are stronger and more intense. When combined with increased time spent outside, this means increased potential for serious skin damage, including sunburn. And no part of your body is closer to those harsh UV rays than the top of your head. In fact, exposed and unprotected skin on your scalp can suffer damage in as little as 15 minutes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Scalp sunburn can be painful. If that sunburn is severe or deep enough, the inflammation that results can also lead to telogen effluvium, a condition that causes temporary hair loss. That’s the last thing someone with thinning hair wants, but it is people with thinning hair or a bald scalp who are most vulnerable to scalp sunburn.

Fortunately, with a little care and preparation, you can protect your scalp and prevent sunburn on your scalp throughout the warm and sunny summer months. It’s as easy as going to your medicine cabinet or closet.

Use Scalp Sunscreen

Even those folks who slather their face, torso, arms, and legs with sunscreen every time they go out in the sun can forget about showing the same TLC to their scalp.

In addition to the sprays and lotions, you use to protect your body, make sure you also have sunscreen on hand that is specifically designed to protect your scalp and hair. There are numerous sunscreen products that fit the bill, specifically oils with UVA/UVB protection incorporated that won’t leave you with greasy strands full of thick, white sunscreen. These also protect the hair itself from the sun, which can fade color when it oxidizes.

To protect your scalp, you’ll want to apply sunscreen at least 30 minutes before going out in the sun and after every two hours of spending time outside. If you go swimming or are perspiring a lot, you will need to reapply the sunscreen that has been diluted or washed away by that moisture. For full-on protection, wear a stylish sunhat or baseball cap when enjoying the outdoors, which protects both skin and hair follicles simultaneously.

Wear a Hat

Put a lid on it. Wearing baseball caps, wide-brimmed hats, or any head covering that completely keeps the scalp out of the sun is a great way to maximize your time in the sun with minimal effort. If hats aren’t your thing, make sure that you find yourself plenty of shade under an umbrella or canopy to keep those dangerous rays off of your scalp.

What Your Scalp and Hair Says About You

Hair If, as they say, the eyes are the windows to the soul, then your scalp and hair can be a mirror reflecting your health. Your hair follicles and the skin on your scalp change as you age, as do many other aspects of your health. What you see going on up top may be the result of changes or other issues going on inside your body. So, what does your hair and scalp say about you?

Often, changes in your hair such as hair loss say very little beyond the fact that your genes or other factors are causing you to lose your hair. Other times, it may be an indication that you have other medical concerns which you should investigate and address.

  • Is dandruff annoying or embarrassing? Yes. Is it a cause for worry or a sign of something more serious? Probably not. Dandruff is simply a visible sign that the skin cells of the scalp are producing new cells faster than normal. This results in excessive shedding of dead skin cells, which fall from the scalp as dandruff flakes. Dandruff can be related to treatable conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, stress, seborrheic dermatitis, or vitamin B deficiency. However, to date, there is no clinical evidence that dandruff is a symptom or cause of hair loss or any other serious conditions.
  • Shedding hair. Even folks with full, robust heads of hair shed hair regularly. Our scalps shed anywhere from 50 to 100 strands per day. As such, noticing hair in your drain isn’t inherently a cause for alarm. You can perform a “hair-pull” test to get an indication (though not conclusive) about whether the amount of hair you are shedding is a sign of a hair loss problem.
  • Graying hair. While anemia, thyroid issues, vitamin B12 deficiency, and vitiligo can cause premature graying, your salt-and-pepper hair is more likely the result of genetics rather than a poor reflection of your health.
  • Balding individuals or those with thinning hair are particularly vulnerable to sunburn on the scalp. The consequences of sunburn and overexposure to UV rays include not only short-term pain but long-term skin damage and an increased risk of skin cancer. Too much sun can also turn your hair brittle, dry, and more prone to breaks and splits. 10 Tricks to Help Hair Appear Fuller

But short of professional treatment, here are 10 tricks you can use to make your hair appear fuller, even though such tricks may offer only temporary benefits and won’t necessarily stop your hair from thinning further:

  1. Stop smoking. If you smoke, your heart and lungs aren’t the only parts of your body which suffer. A study by the Harvard School of Public Health found that smoking can accelerate hair loss by increasing the levels of hormones which trigger hair loss and by constricting the blood vessels which supply needed nutrients to your hair follicles.
  2. Avoid heavy product. Heavy waxes and gels can make thinning hair look even thinner by weighing it down and making it appear flat. Add volume with products like mousse or sprays specifically designed to provide “root lift.”
  3. Put the comb down. Try using your fingers to style your hair and add volume instead of constantly combing and brushing, which can make your hair look flat and limp.
  4. Wash your hair. Don’t buy into the idea that washing your hair regularly can cause problems. Good regular-use shampoos – used regularly – can make your hair appear thicker, as dirty and greasy hair will appear flat on your scalp.
  5. Use hair-thickening shampoos. The name “hair-thickening”, when used with many shampoos, is a bit deceptive. Such shampoos don’t actually thicken your hair follicles but can do a good job of making your hair temporarily appear Hair-thickening or volumizing shampoos work by artificially swelling the hair shaft and depositing a thin film of the active ingredients on your follicles. Again, such effects are temporary and cosmetic; these shampoos don’t do anything to slow or stop hair loss.
  6. Blow-dry, but not too much. Blow-drying can add volume to your hair, but avoid using too much heat for too long as doing so can damage your hair’s natural proteins and make it brittle.
  7. Keep the sun at bay. Sunburn damages hair follicles just as it does the skin. It makes hair fragile and brittle and causes the scalp to produce superoxide, a substance which can cause hair follicles to switch from a growth phase to a shedding phase.
  8. Air dry. While blow-drying can also add volume, letting your hair air dry and styling with your fingers can add more texture as well.
  9. East more soy. Recent studies suggest that a molecule produced in the intestine when soy is consumed may block the effects of the hormone which triggers hair loss.
  10. Keep it short. It can be understandable to think that growing your hair longer would make it appear thicker, but the opposite is actually true. For men with thinning hair, a shorter cut will make your hair appear denser and keep peoples’ attention away from your thinning hair and on your face.

  • Don’t let styling products build up. Despite concern to the contrary, there is little evidence that common styling products like mousse, gels, or hairspray have any negative effect on our follicles if used correctly. The key is ensuring that you wash your hair regularly to prevent such products from contributing to any long-term buildup of sebum-based plaque. When combined with pollutants, oils, and sweat, this buildup could lead to a condition called scalp folliculitis which can make it impossible for hair follicles to support a normal hair growth cycle.
  • Embrace the grey. If you are going grey, dying or bleaching your hair can be a recipe for making things much worse than some salt and pepper. Full bleaches can result in fried, yellow hair, and some dyes may make your hair too dark for your complexion or appear obviously unnatural.
  • Don’t try to do two things at once. 2-in-1 shampoos and conditioners sound convenient, but trying to wash and condition your hair simultaneously simply doesn’t work. Shampooing and conditioning are two separate processes that are at odds with each other. Shampooing opens up hair cuticles releasing product and dirt build-up. Conditioning, on the other hand, closes the hair cuticles and puts needed moisture back into the hair shaft. Keep these two hair care regimens separate.
