About Hair Transplants
Hair Transplant Surgery – An Art And A Science
In ever increasing numbers, men and women are turning to surgery to restore lost hair and find a greater sense of well-being. The days of plugs are long behind us. New procedures and sophisticated technology are creating astonishing results. At the Hair Transplant Institute of Miami, we practice follicular unit transplantation (FUT), a refined and proven procedure known for producing a full, natural-looking head of hair.
During follicular unit transplantation, a donor strip of non-balding hair at the back of the head is carefully evaluated under the microscope. Hair grows in small bundles called follicular units, spaced 1 millimeter apart and containing up to 3, sometimes 4 hairs. Between 1,000 and 3,000 specifically sculpted follicular-unit grafts are removed and implanted one at a time into tiny openings in the recipient, or balding area. The openings created for each graft are no larger than a pinprick.
But technical skills are only part of the story. Creating a natural-looking head of hair is also an artistic endeavor. Sensitivity to the nuances that maintain proper balance and proportion is a refined skill, developed over time in conjunction with technical expertise. Transplanted hair needs to blend with existing hair to create continuity over the entire scalp. Each graft must be specifically positioned in the right area and at the correct angle to create a natural effect. By working with an overall image of your appearance, Dr. Nusbaum is attuned to how the hair will look in the weeks and months following the procedure, as well as decades later.
